tly moralistic view of sexual relations, inwardly torn apart by feelings of lust andguilt” (Hopwood 405). It is self-evident that Henry harbors no shred of guilt andremorse about his affair with Jacky. He defends that “I am a man, and have lived aman’s past.” (Forster 248) Meanwhile, this is also a viral malady of contemporarypeople whose heart have been ripped into fragments. CHAPTER THREE A TERMINUS AT HOWARDS END:MARGARET’S FAILURE TO REALIZE A COMPLETECONNECTION

The novel begins with Helen’s visit to Howards End and ends with a hay festivalat Howards End, where an ambiguous harmony is vividly presented. At the terminus,Margaret believes that she can make use of the spirit of the house to help Henryrecognize the essence of connection, thus establishing a Schlegel-Wilcox dynasty anda utopian connection. However, the connection turns out to be transitory and incompletein some aspects. For one thing, London’s encroachment is extending its range to thesuburban areas, placing the unstable and shaking union at Howards End in great danger. For another, the utopian connection is formed by excluding some characters who wouldruin the present status at Howards End, and the connection is destitute of emotionalreconciliation.

When Margaret is fatigued and disillusioned by Henry’s emotional obtuseness andmoral inconsistency, her journey arrives at the final station—Howards End, but it is nottotally an idyllic paradise secluded from the worldly society, and has been jeopardizedby urbanization. The country house is located on the border between country and city.It is manifest that Howards End will be devoured by the city , however, at a temporaryaspect, it is a safe shelter waiting for the formidable advance of urbanization to disturbits incomplete connection.

CONCLUSION

So far this thesis has analyzed the incomplete connection in Margaret Schlegel’sjourney. Instead of being regarded as simple backdrops where the plot develops, threespaces in Margaret’s journey truly take part in the construction of the novel and witnessMargaret’s mental growth and her perception about how to establish a completeconnection. This thesis has first disclosed the social harbingers in London that obstructMargaret’s mission to connect completely. It has then depicted Margaret’s sojourn atOniton Grange, where she encounters a series of dilemmas, which complicates herconnection and makes her feel disillusioned. Finally Margaret reaches her destinationat Howards End, and establishes a Schlegel-Wilcox dynasty and a utopian connection.

After her minute and subtle observation and experience in her journey, Margaretgradually grasps the method to make a connection but eventually fails to make itcomplete. Her departure论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
