Anna’s identity crisis has already been a problem since her childhood, which isrooted in the complicated postcolonial environment of Caribbean. After she drifts intoLondon, her cultural identity crisis becomes more acute. “Because these two worldstend to cancel each other out, Anna is left suspended, floating in a semitrance fromone sexual encounter to the next” (Wilson 69). At the beginning of the novel, Anna’sinterior monologue shows readers what she really feels when she first arrives inEngland: “It was as if a curtain had fallen, hiding everything I had ever known. It wasalmost like being born again. The colours were different, the smells different, thefeeling things gave you right down inside yourself was different” (7). The word“different” appears three times, which reflects that England and Caribbean are totallydifferent in almost all aspects. For Anna, who grows up in the picturesque, warm andgorgeous Caribbean region, the cold, grey and rigidly hierarchical England is anotherkind of unfamiliar and unsuitable tune. She has no ability to coordinate these twotunes. In the novel, there are many descriptions of Caribbean scenery and Caribbeancustoms.
