CHAPTER ONEANNA’S LOSS OF HER OWN CULTURALIDENTITYASACARIBBEAN CREOLE

1.1Anna Morgan’s Identity Crisis Behind the Two Tunes

Anna’s identity crisis has already been a problem since her childhood, which isrooted in the complicated postcolonial environment of Caribbean. After she drifts intoLondon, her cultural identity crisis becomes more acute. “Because these two worldstend to cancel each other out, Anna is left suspended, floating in a semitrance fromone sexual encounter to the next” (Wilson 69). At the beginning of the novel, Anna’sinterior monologue shows readers what she really feels when she first arrives inEngland: “It was as if a curtain had fallen, hiding everything I had ever known. It wasalmost like being born again. The colours were different, the smells different, thefeeling things gave you right down inside yourself was different” (7). The word“different” appears three times, which reflects that England and Caribbean are totallydifferent in almost all aspects. For Anna, who grows up in the picturesque, warm andgorgeous Caribbean region, the cold, grey and rigidly hierarchical England is anotherkind of unfamiliar and unsuitable tune. She has no ability to coordinate these twotunes. In the novel, there are many descriptions of Caribbean scenery and Caribbeancustoms. The English social environment and the cityscape of London are alsodescribed in details. Anna’s very different feelings about the landscapes of the twospaces reveals how she recognizes herself and constructs her cultural identity and atthe same time, Anna’s exploration of her cultural identity also reflects her identitycrisis behind the two tunes. Anna’s sense of identity crisis becomes more acute due tothe transfer of space to London. Her identity crisis is also related to the darkness ofBritish society at the time and the female companions around her. Besides, Francineand Hester have a deep influence on Anna since she was a child. As Anna’s situationdeteriorates, her cultural identity crisis gradually deepens until she loses herCaribbean Creole cultural identity.

1.2 Two Different Important Influence on Young Anna’s Crisis of Cultural Identity:Anna’s English Stepmother Hester and the Black Maidservant Francine

Anna’s English stepmother Hester and her black maid Francine do affect Anna’sself-identity recognition. Both of them have a significant impact on the crisis ofAnna’s cultural identity and even Anna’s loss of her identity as a Caribbean Creole. Thus it can be seen that both the social environment and the family environment havea great impact on one’s self-awareness early in their life, especially themother-daughter relationship. Ronnie Scharfman points out Rhys’s “yearning for hermother, her desire for this present-absent figure” (100) in an important article. He alsostresses the damage caused in Rhys by the “distant, inaccessible, depressed, rejectingmother” (100) and of Antoinette Cosway’s (and Rhys’s) “deeper, regressive need forthe all-encompassing maternal bond which she did not know” (102). In the novel,Anna’s real mother dies when she is very young. She does not have a deep impressionon her own mother, but she is proud that she is the fifth generation on her mother’ssid论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
