5.1 Major Findings

The major findings of this translation practice report can be summarized as follows:

First, in the translation process, good preparation is the premise for completing an excellent translation, and proofreading is the guarantee for an excellent translation. Before translating, it is necessary to read the original text at least three times and learn about the relevant materials of the source text. Besides, preparation of translation tools is important. For proofreading, in addition to self-revision, seeking professional help is essential for later modification and polishing.

Second, theoretical preparation is also critical. In the process of translation, the author finds that relevance theory is a practical theory and has a strong explanatory power for translation communication. In this report, the author mainly describes and explains the context, ostensive-inferential process and optimal relevance in relevance theory. In terms of context, lexical information, encyclopedic information and logical information play an important role in the translator’s understanding of the source text. In the ostensive-inferential process, the translator does her best to convey the informative intention of the original author and achieve the communicative intention. Optimal relevance requires the translator to strengthen the contextual effect and enhance accuracy and readability of the translation to reduce the readers’ efforts. All of them have laid a theoretical foundation for the author to solve the problems in translation. Under the guidance of relevance theory, the translator can give corresponding solutions to problems in translation.

Third, as the basic framework of this report, CEA framework is very important for the author to understand the translation process. Translation itself is a process of comprehension, expression and adaptation. In the stage of comprehension, the translator uses the context to solve the problems related to polysemous words, special terms and context. In the stage of expression, based on the ostensive-inferential process and optimal relevance, corresponding strategies are given to solve the problems in word selection, collocation, discourse coherence and Chinglish. In the stage of adaptation, the author utilizes omission, addition and sentence transformation to ensure that content, format and original author’s intention can be accurately conveyed to readers.
