Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Background of the Project

With the development of modern science and technology,technical English,which combinesbasic English with professional knowledge,is becoming increasing thriving.As a kind of technicaltext,Information and Communication Technologies(ICT)text provides ICT practitioners with avariety of highly professional scientific and technological knowledge and skills.In the context ofthe growing development of global information and communication technology,the communicationand cooperation in the field of ICT is becoming closer and closer.As an important learning materialfor ICT practitioners,the importance of ICT text translation is becoming increasingly prominent.However,due to the differences between literary translation and scientific translation,translationtheories at home and abroad should not be applied blindly to the translation of ICT text.ICTtranslation requires concise and effective transmission of information to keep up with the pace oftechnological development.The translation variation theory proposed by Professor HuangZhonglian is the very translation theory suitable for this kind of text style.Currently,there are fewstudies on the application of translation variation theory in the English-Chinese translation of ICTtext in China.Therefore,we select this kind of ICT text and analyze it with translation variationtheory,which has important guiding significance for translation practice in the new era.

1.2 Significance of the Project

This translation project aims to analyze the examples in the translation of The 5G Economythrough the comparison of two translation versions(the original version and the improved version),and find out how translators use seven variation methods of“addition”,“deletion”,“editing”,“narration”,“condensation”,“combination”and“adaption”in translation.The combination oftheory and practice is helpful to further understand translation variation theory and seven variationmethods.And through the analysis of specific cases in ICT text,we understand that translationvariation theory has a very important guiding significance for ICT translation and offers a newperspective for the study of ICT translation.

The research finding of this project also has a great significance for improving translationteaching,enhancing ICT translation ability and stimulating students’interests in learning English.Inguiding and teaching translation,teachers should avoid making casual and subjective comments onstudents’translations.On the basis of clear translation theory guidance,teachers and studentsshould study and explore translation methods adopted by translators in an objective,fair andscientific way as far as possible.

Judging from the above,this research enjoys theoretical and practical significance in the field of translation.
