Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Translation Tasks

With the rapid development of the information industry, ICT has been the core of the information industry and has received unprecedented attention. Thus it is urgent for translators in the ICT to provide accurate and appropriate texts for relevant people.

As a postgraduate student majoring in English translation, the author has learned quite a few important translation courses such as literary translation, business English translation, ICT (Information and Communications Technology) translation. Besides, the author has implemented some translation practices which are conducive to improving her translation skills. ICT translation course is new for the author, she started to learn this course in the second semester in spring 2020. This course was offered in consideration of the main characteristics of the majors at our university. The author was so interested in it. When the author was planning to write a translation report for her graduation in September 2020, she decided to choose some material concerning ICT. Fortunately, her ICT teacher sent them some white papers downloaded from China Academy of Information and Communications Technology. After discussing with her tutor, the author chose the white paper 2020 Digital China Industry Development Report (Information and Communication Industry) as the translation material. 

When the translator gets the translation material, the first step is to read the original text carefully and thoroughly so as to master the basic structure, stylistic and linguistic features of the text. This translation material is an interdisciplinary text, the translator should have a clear grasp of knowledge of ICT and economics. Therefore, the translator reads some other Chinese and English white papers downloaded from China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, which helps the translator better understand the material to be translated. The translator chooses two chapters of more than 10,000 Chinese characters from the white paper for C-E translation. Because of too many terms and long and complicated sentences, the text is not easy for the translator. In order to complete this translation practice with quality and efficiency, the translator divides this translation process into three parts: preparations before translation, translation and modification. 

1.2 The Source Text

2020 Digital China Industry Development Report (Information and Communication Industry) was published by China Academy of Information and Communications Technology. It is a white paper related to ICT industry. This white paper takes the development of market entities as the starting point and mainly focuses on the current situation of the domestic ICT industry and global development environment, aiming to seek overall development and find opportunities in challenges. This report is divided into four parts. The first part introduces the international background and the development of ICT industry. The second part analyzes the major trends that affect the development of digital technology.
