Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Background of the Project

The source text of the translation project is a book about Education called TheEnd of Education:Redefining the Value of School,which was written in English bythe American educator Neil Postman in 1996.The full text of the original book isover 60,000 words.The translation task is to translate the whole book into Chinese.The final translation is over 100,000 words in Chinese.

According to Oxford Dictionary,“education”refers to the process of teaching,training and learning,especially in schools or colleges,to improve knowledge anddevelop skills.Education can be regarded as the transmission of the values andknowledge of a society.As societies grow more complex,more selective andefficient means of cultural transmission must be evolved.It is well known thateducation is the cornerstone of national development.The development ofeducation will directly affect the national quality improvement and the nationalrejuvenation.“The period of school education consequently becomes the time inwhich moral virtues,crucial for further functioning in public space and occupationalroles,are developed in maturing persons”(Horowski 2020:448).

1.2 Objectives of the Project

By translating The End of Education:Redefining the Value of School,thetranslator desires to accomplish four main objectives.

First of all,the translator hopes to improve translation competence through thetranslation project.For the source text has a very formal writing type,there are alarge number of academic terms and long complicated sentences,which havebrought great difficulties and challenges for the translator to understand the sourcecontent and express in the target language.For this reason,the translator consultedplenty of related literature on translation strategies to solve problems,which hasconsequently developed the translator’s translation competence.

Secondly,the translator intends to produce a Chinese reference version of TheEnd of Education:Redefining the Value of School for Chinese readers,especiallythose who have great interests in education research.By the time the translator hascompleted the translation,there is no published Chinese translation of this book,and no Chinese translation can be found on the Internet.For domestic educationalexperts,scholars and researchers and students of education-related majors,aChinese version can assist them in learning the academic progress of westernscholars in character education.What’s more,ideological exchange betweencountries can bring some inspiration to researchers in the domestic field ofeducation.

Chapter 2 Reiss’s Text Typology and Source TextAnalysis

2.1 Reiss’s Text Typology
