6.1 Acculturation status of West African business people in Guangzhou

West African business people’s acculturation status has been investigated from twoaspects: psychological and sociocultural adaptation. In this section, West Africanbusiness people’s psychological adaptation and sociocultural adaptation status arediscussed.

6.1.1 Sociocultural adaptation status of West African business people inGuangzhou

West African business people’s sociocultural adaptation status was measured by theircross-cultural behavioral competence in five domains on the 5-Point-Likert scale.With a mean score of 2.97, West African business people’s sociocultural adaptationstatus was found to be relatively good. However, they experience different levels ofsociocultural adaptation in the five domains. To be specific, it was found that WestAfrican business people adapt better in work situation and ecological environment,but encounter some difficulties in interpersonal communication, maintenance ofinterests and community engagement, and language adaptation in Guangzhou.

With respect to interpersonal communication, the mean score of item 7(interacting with Chinese members of the opposite sex in Guangzhou) is the lowest,followed by the mean of item 4 (accurately interpreting and responding to Chinese people’s gestures and facial expressions in Guangzhou) and the mean of item 3(interacting at social events in Guangzhou). During the interview, Lawrence(interviewee 4) recalled that he used to greet Chinese girls or simile to them whenthey looked at each other in the street, but most of Chinese girls ignored his greeting.He added: “it’s common to say hello when people look at each other, but why Chinesegirls think too much; they act as if it was because we want to have relationship withthem that we greet them; I am so disappointed at their attitude toward us, so now Iwill not give my greeting to Chinese girls in the street”. 

CHAPTER SEVENCONCLUSION

7.1 Major findings

In an attempt to identify influencing factors of West African business people’sacculturation in Guangzhou, the study has investigated the contributions of severalpotential influencing factors to West African business people’s two forms ofacculturation in Guangzhou. The major findings of this study are summarized asfollows.

With respect to the first research question, the findings reveal that West Africanbusiness people’s higher sociocultural adaptation is significantly associated withhaving prior oversea work experience, greater Chinese language competence, lowerlevel of perceived discrimination, more use of media, higher level of resilience,greater social support including support from Chinese and non-Chinese friends, moresocial contact with Chinese. However, family support has no correlation with WestAfrican business people’s sociocultural adaptation.
