CHAPTER ONEINTRODUCTION
1.1 Research background
China-Africa relations can be traced back to 1950s. Over the years, with theintensification of “South-South collaboration”, China-Africa relations have beengreatly strengthened, particularly in economic and political areas. China has nowbecome Africa’s largest trading partner in the world. Alongside the intensifiedbilateral and multilateral trade, a large number of Africans of diverse origins migrateto China to seek business opportunities.
Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province, also known as the world’sfactory, attracts a large number of Africans due to its booming economy and uniquegeographic location. It is said that more Africans can be found in Guangzhou than inany other part of China (Bodomo, 2020). Although no one knows the concrete figuresof Africans in Guangzhou due to the presence of many African overstayers, localgovernment reported that there were 13,652 Africans legally residing in Guangzhou in20191. Many Africans in Guangzhou are diplomats, representatives from Africancountries or international students. But the majority of Africans in Guangzhou areAfrican independent business people and traders who do business with Chinese (Zhouet al., 2016), which are broadly categorized into “African business people” in thisstudy. Those African business people usually buy the cheap-manufactured goods andresell them to their country for a profit.
1.2 Research purpose and significance
The purpose of this study is to identify the factors that influence West Africanbusiness people’s acculturation in Guangzhou. Specifically, the author selected sevenlarge potential influencing factors and attempts to investigate the influence of thesefactors on West African business people’s acculturation in Guangzhou. Thesepotential influencing factors include five individual factors (resilience, media usage,past oversea work experience, perceived Chinese language proficiency, social contact with Chinese) and two situational factors (perceived discrimination, perceived socialsupport).
This study has both theoretical and practical contributions. Theoretically, sincethere is a paucity of study investigating influencing factors of West African businesspeople’s acculturation in China, the current study can address the research gaps,enriching acculturation research on African business people in China. Practically, byidentifying the factors that facilitate or hinder the acculturation of West Africanbusiness people in Guangzhou, this study can contribute to a deeper understanding ofWest African business people’s acculturation process in Guangzhou and provideimplications for the effective intervention measures and acculturation programs thatlocal government or related organizations could cultivate to assist West Africanbusiness people with adaptation to Guangzhou.
