摘要
严复是中国翻译史上赫赫有名的人物，他的翻译作品一直都是学者们研究的焦点，因为这其中隐含着一个深刻的悖论:一方面他的译作融入了较多的创作性成分，与源语文本有较大的出入，令人难以界定他的作品到底是翻译还是再创作;另一方面他的译作独具特色，从卷峡浩繁的其他译作中脱颖而出、独领风骚，对他所处的社会产生了深远的影响。
传统的规约性翻译理论侧重用一系列的语言规则来考察严复的译作，通常只得出他的译作不忠实的结论，并不能解决上述的悖论。20世纪90年代，文化翻译学派的异军突起为解决这个悖论提供了崭新的视角。本文借助勒弗维尔的文化操纵理论，尝试从意识形态和诗学两方面解释严复的选材和翻译手段，以期对他的翻译思想取得更全面的认识。
本文除引言和结语外一共分为四个部分：
    引言扼要地介绍了主题，展示作者的写作目的和本文的主要框架。
第一部分主要介绍了操控学派的发展，进而着重介绍了勒菲弗尔的操控理论
中的两个个重要因素:意识形态、诗学，并以此作为全文的理论基础。
第二部分阐述与严复翻译活动相关的文化操纵因素。探讨严复所处时代的社会意识形态和诗学以及他本人的意识形态和诗学。
第三部分从意识形态角度出发，分析文化操纵对严复选材思想的影响，主要从严复文化目的和原文本的选择进行分析。
第四部分着重从诗学以和意识形态角度出发，分析严复在语言、句法以及词法上的选择，对译文结构的改变和其他翻译策略的运用，探讨在具体的社会文化背景下的诗学和意识形态对译者翻译思想的影响;

Abstract
Yan Fu is an illustrious personage in Chinese translation history. At all times, scholars have riveted their attention on the translations of this master in particular, because here lays a paradox. On one hand, Yan Fu’s translation is incorporated with a considerable number of improvisations; hence the deviations, which make it difficult to define them as translation or recreation. On the other hand, his translations, regarded as literary excellence in other tremendous translations, have exerted a far-reaching influence on the society.
The traditional prescriptive approach used to pass judgment on Yan Fu’s translations by a series of linguistic rules, which, more often than not, merely bears out the conclusion that his translation is inaccurate. However, it is of little help to explain the paradox above. In the 1990s, the rise of the cultural school in translation studies brings in new perspective to resolve the issue. Based on Lefevere’s cultural manipulation theory, the thesis, attempts to describe Yan Fu’s translation thoughts in his translations, in the hope that a relatively comprehensive understanding of his translation thoughts can be obtained.
In addition to introduction and conclusion, the thesis contains four parts
The introduction generalizes the theme, and presents the author’s purpose of writing as well as the structure of the paper.
Part One provides the theoretical basis for the present thesis. There will be a brief introduction to the Translation Studies School and the theory of Andre Lefevere will be discussed in its two important factors respectively.
Part Two carries out a close examination of the social-cultural context related to Yan Fu’s translation activity and see how social ideology and Yan Fu’s own ideology are as well as social poetics and Yan Fu’s poetics.
Part Three provides a close examination of how cultural manipulation exercises on Yan Fu’s translation thoughts on the choice of the source text. In this part, Yan Fu’s cultural purpose and his choice of originals will be analyzed from the perspective of ideology.
Part Four analyzes Yan Fu’s translation thoughts on his translation strategies from the perspective of two cultural manipulation factors, that is, the ideology and poetics. Yan Fu’s change of the whole structure of the source text, the choices of the language, syntax and diction, and the translation strategy are discussed under the constraint of them.
  The conclusion sums up the whole thesis.
