1.1 Research Background研究背景
Su Tong is one of the most famous writers of the avant-garde www.51lunwen.org in modern Chineseliterature. His novels, such as Qi Qie Cheng Qun and Mi, were adapted as films andbecame very popular, because of which, Su Tong gets well-known in China. Hisnovels always hold the characters of imaginative and circumlocutory plots, profoundimplication, as well as beautiful and sensitive words. He is good at showingcharacters’ inner world and depicting the real human nature. And as one of his “NewHistorical Novel”, Wo De Di Wang Sheng Ya fully reflects his unique personality andstyle. Its English translation was done by Howard Goldblatt, a translator who has agood command of Chinese language and has translated a number of works of suchfamous writers in China as Xiao Hong (萧红), Mo Yan (莫言), Su Tong (苏童),Wang Shuo (王朔), Jia Pingwa (贾平凹), ect. However, little attention and study havebeen given to the English version of Wo De Di Wang Sheng Ya, translated by thefamous American sinologist Professor Howard Goldblatt, after its publication in 2005.Post-colonial theory, flourishing in the late 1980s, as a type of theoretic criticaldiscourse of culture, studies the power relationship of all cultures, societies, nations,with other cultures, investigating how the culture of conqueror arbitrarily distorts theculture of the conquered; how the latter responds, adapts, resists or overcome thehigh-pressure of domination of colonial cultures. Since its occurrence, there seldomappear studies on the English version of Wo De Di Wang Sheng Ya on the basis ofpostcolonial translation theory. Therefore, the author chooses its English version tostudy from the perspective of post-colonial theory.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Research研究的目的和意义
Because of the different cultural backgrounds, the translator must make somevariations in the process of the translation in the context of post-colonialism. As amore detailed research based on close reading in the framework of postcolonialtranslation theory, the purposes of the thesis are to observe the rule of translationactivity from another aspect through the study of variations and to study the reasonsof the variationsThe first significance of this thesis lies in the research object--- Wo De Di WangSheng Ya. There appear many textual analyses on the basis of postcolonial translationtheory. However, none of them chooses Wo De Di Wang Sheng Ya as a case to studythe variations in its English version. So in this thesis, the author takes Wo De Di WangSheng Ya as a case to analyze the variations in its English version. And it is of greatsignificance to the promotion of the study of the English version of Su Tong’s Wo DeDi Wang Sheng Ya. Secondly, the thesis is a more detailed research based on closereading text in the framework of this theory. It helps to promote the studies of thepostcolonial translation, and will stimulate us to take the phenomenon of variations asa fact and study it from the cultural perspective.
