In this book，he comments that they successfully “clarified thevery complicated relationships based on age, blood relationship, seniority in the novelby using different titles.，’Following Soong's (1976) pioneering study on the brief criticisms of translatingpersonal titles and names in Hawkes’ version, close attention has been paid tocomparative studies of translation of personal names among the original versions, thetwo English versions (H&M's and Y&Y，s). https://www.51lunwen.org/translation/ And this has resulted in great amount ofresearch findings with significant insights and implications of translation strategiesand approaches.Yang Ying (2001) studied the translation approaches, strategies and techniques inHawkes’ translation and an objective evaluation of the translation with reference toPeter Newmark's translation criticism formula which help the translators to chooseappropriate translat ion methods for a specific purpose and to improve their studies.Gu Yue (2007) has conducted some researches on the translation strategiesadopted in translation personal names in five English versions of the Hong Lou Meng(hereafter HLM) from the perspective of referential theory. She tends to explore towhat extent did the translators succeed in representing the cultural context. Her studyfocuses on the connotative meaning of the females' names, the translation approachesused in different versions and the assessment of the translations in reproducing theconnotative meaning of personal names.Li Zhijian (2008) mainly focus on the translation of personal names, courtesynames and literary names in HLM from the perspective of cultural schemata. Hispaper illustrates the role that cultural schemata has played in the process of decodingand re-encoding of the cultural information that lies behind names in HLM, and comesto the conclusion that the complicated translation process is in nature a process oftransferring certain schemata with culture-specific features.Tan Shenglan (2009) takes HLM as a carrier, and tries to apply Delabastita'stheory of pun translation to the puns in the personal names. His research is based onthe comparison between the translations of the Yangs' and Hawkes’ versions, andconcludes that the theory of pun translation gives guidance to the translators.However, to the best knowledge of the author, studies of the translation ofpersonal names in HLM have scarcely been under consideration from the perspectiveof Adaptation Theory (AT).

　　This study is based on the context adaptation inclination in the adaptation theory; toanalyze the translation of characters names in the English translation version of HLMby David Hawkes and John Minford (Hereafter Hawkes' version).
