ion methods and strategies which translator adopted and the adaptationinclination he used in different language contexts.The personal names translation will be investigated from the aspects of phoneticadaptation，cultural adaptation, writer's intention, reader's aesthetic conceptions,reader's acceptability, etc. To explore how adaptation is achieved in the translationand why Hawkes adjusts his translation strategies in different language environments.Moreover, the author tries to figure out the merits and demerits of Hawkes’ namestranslation from the perspective of AT, thus hoping to cast some light on the namestranslation.

　　1.3 Data Collection and Methodology of the Study研究方法和数据收集
　　First of all, the author of the thesis will find out all the names of the characters fromthe original Chinese version David Hawkes bases his translation on, i.e. the ChengyiVersion (程乙本).Secondly, the author will read the 120 chapters of The Story of the Stone and findout all the corresponding translations by David Hawkes and John Minford.And then the author will observe the overall patterns and classify these collecteddata into different categories and have a detailed analysis of them from theperspective of AT. During the process, the comparative descriptive and analyticalapproaches will also be employed to make detailed study. Therefore, this research isboth qualitative and quantitative.

　　
　　1.4 Structure of the Thesis论文结构
　　The present paper begins by reviewing the previous studies on the translation ofNames in HLM,In Chapter Two, it will make an account for the theoretical background of thepaper, as well as the philosophical origin of adaptation theory which involved in thisstudy. The adaptation pattern can be roughly divided into two parts: the key notions oflanguages and four perspectives of investigation. The three key notions of languagesare variability, negotiability and adaptability. The four perspectives of investigationare mainly about the contextual correlates; structural objects of adaptability, dynamicsof adaptability and the salience of the adaptation process. With the framework of theadaptation theory, we can have a deeper understanding of the translation and therelationship between adaptation and translation. Based on the analysis of theadaptation to the linguistic structure and extra-linguistic structure, it will drawattention to comparison among the two structures.In Chapter Three, the author discusses the Chinese and English naming systemand the names in HLM, and gives a detailed classification of characters in the noveland finds out the Cao Xueqin's naming approaches, by means of descriptive study onhundreds of names in HLM.In Chapter Four, is the core part of the thesis. It analyses the names translation inThe Story of The Stone by David Hawkes from five perspectives of adaptation theory.This comparison and contrast aims to explore how successfully or badly the translatorconcerned represent the connotative meaning of characters' names in HLM. Then theauthor comments on the merits and demerits of Hawkes’ translation.The last chapter, which is not the least important part, is about the major findingsand the limitations of the study. Finally, the author gives some suggestions for furtherstudies in this research area.
