Being a uniquely splendid cultural gem in the vast realm of classical Chineseliterature, Yi’an’s Ci-poetry enjoys long-lasting prestige for its particular literary valueand artistic glamour. Though its introduction into the English world began rather earlyin the 1920s, the early translation selections appeared rather arbitrary and incompleteand relevant researches inadequate and unsystematic. Despite that later quite someresearches were carried out toward more comprehensive studies on translating Yi’an’sCi-poems into English, most of them were done centering on certain theoreticalframework or discussions on operational techniques concerning specific linguisticproperties. Given this, the author of the thesis tries to approach the research from anew perspective by primarily digging into an in-depth examination of thepredominant features distinguishing Yi’an’s Ci-poetry from others, and upon whichestablish the principles and strategies guiding its translating practices.Through careful studies on ST research materials, the author has come tosummarize Yi’an’s Ci-poems as embodying three most salient stylistic features: GraceOut of Plainness and Colloquialism, Unique Images Manifesting Cultural Richness,and Particular Pathetic Beauty, and arranged the main chapters of the thesisrespectively expounding the conveyance of those features in translating Yi’an’sCi-poetry into English. After exploring the transference of Yi’an’s plain and colloquiallanguage style generally from three aspects of descriptive techniques, rhyming andphonic pattern and formal arrangement in Chapter Two, the author comes to manysuggestions regarding choice of words, consideration of emotional color,compensation for rhyming effect, seeking homogeneity between languages, imitatingoriginal formal specialty, etc. to preserve the plain elegance of the Yi’an style. Bymeticulous studies in Chapter Three on the cultural richness reflected in the variedimage types, innovative application of rhetorical devices and opulent intra- and extra-text intertextuality in Yi’an’s Ci-poetry, the author unfolds the gigantic cultural gapclogging between the cultural transmission. In this regard, through ample caseanalyses, workable translation methods including substitution, transliteration plusannotation or artful evasion plus other compensatory measures are proposed. The LastChapter sums up the particular significance of pathetic beauty abounding in Yi’an’sCi-poems, which is further stratified into three levels according to Yi’an’s personalexperiences against the turbulent political and social context at the juncture of theNorthern and Southern Song Dynasties.
