4.2 Ying Ruocheng’s Habitus and His Drama Translation
Who is Ying Ruocheng? He may be known as the popular actor Ying Da’s fatherto many people. But in fact Ying Ruocheng is a figure who deserves more attentionand applause than his son, for he is a far more talented and versatile person, and hasmade greater contributions, though that may be unknown to the youngsters. YingRuocheng is respected as a “cultural ambassador”, dedicated to the cultural exchangesbetween China and the west, especially between China and the United Kingdom, aswell as between China and the United States. To be specific, he is mainly an actor andalso a translator in his lifetime, a director from the 1980s, a journalist in ChinaReconstructs from 1975 to 1979, a visiting professor to University of Missouri inKansas City (UMKC) in both 1982 and 1984, a vice minister of culture from 1986 to1990, and an informant for the government since 1950s and a prisoner from 1968 to1971. He could be called a legend domestically and even worldly. He is called “anunusually talented artist” by Liang Bingkun[梁秉堃, 1998:25] and “an civil artist” aswell as “a high grade cultural ambassador” by others[ 郑榕等 , 2004:47]. YingRuocheng’s drama translation selection and strategies have an inseparable relationwith his habitus structured by his past experiences. As Bourdieu has said, habitus is“structured structures”, so in the study of Ying’s habitus, the factors which have“structured” his habitus will be analyzed; as the “structured structures” will act as“structuring structures”, so his habitus’s influence on his drama translation selectionas well as strategies will be discussed. In the following part, Ying’s habitus will bediscussed from four aspects including cultural awareness, social experiences, Englishproficiency and dramatic cultivation.
Conclusion
This thesis discusses Ying Ruocheng’s drama translation selection and strategiesand then analyzes the reasons that have made Ying Ruocheng such a unique dramatranslator using French Sociologist Bourdieu’s habitus theory.Ying would choose diversified plays with artistic values, profound thoughts andcultural information to translate and translate the plays for some practical functions,and would also consider the stage performability of the plays. Ying knows thecharacteristics of drama, such as actability, colloquialism, brevity, individuality,poetry and rhetorical devices, and his translation strategy for drama’s sake is to retainand recreate these characteristics and make adaptation if needed. Through themaintenance and recreation of these characteristics, Ying has successfully representedboth literariness and theatricality in his drama translation. Thus the binary oppositionbetween literariness and theatricality, literary reading and stage performing isdismissed in Ying Ruocheng’s translation naturally.
