摘要:In this light, this study endeavors a holistic method to probe into thepredictability of certain language parameters on TEM 8 interpreting assessmentresults.

Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Background to this Study
The focus of interpreting quality Assessment is blurred, which is the subject ofongoing debate in interpreting studies (Feng Jianzhong, 2005). The fact is variousinterpreting tests have not even reached consensuses on test parameters (e.g.Moser-Mercer, 1996; Li Youzi, 2003; Wang Binhua, 2011). A review of interpretingtest outlines can find that the interpreting test of TEM-8 requires “an ability to rendercorrect interpretation of most information and speak fluently” (能将讲话的绝大部分内容准确翻译出来,表达流畅) [高校英语专业八级口试大纲编写小组 2007:4-5]. ChinaAccreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters II (CATTI)1requires “(1) correctpronunciation and clear articulation; (2) standard English, smooth and moderately fastarticulation; (3) a good command of interpreting skills, complete and accuraterendition of the original content without errors or omissions.”(1.发音正确,吐字清晰;2.语言规范,语流顺畅,语速适中;3.熟练运用口译技巧,完整准确地译出原话内容,无错译、漏译。) Shanghai Foreign Language Interpretation Credentials ExaminationAdvanced Interpretation (SFLICE)2requires “accurate transfer of source language,correct wording and syntax with appropriate tone, pronunciation and intonation,fluency and flow” (准确传达原话意思,并注意语气表达得体,语音、语调正确,用词与句法应准确,还要注意说话的流利与速度). Assessment indices of English InterpretingCertificate Ⅲ (CIT)3mainly assesses information transfer(30%), comprehensiveperformance (30%), target text quality (10%) and expression skills (10%). We canroughly conclude that CATTI focuses on pronunciation, fluency and interpretingcompleteness; SFLICE on content accuracy, pronunciation, grammar and fluency; andCIT on content accuracy and comprehensive performance.

1.2 Significance of this Study
Furthermore, a dominant amount of studies still adopt quantitative method.Among those qualitative studies, they largely investigate the impact of a singleparameter on assessment results. In fact, multiple studies in terms of languagespeaking quality and translation quality have shown the advantage of holistic method,by making crosswise and longitudinal comparisons between a wide range ofparameters. Therefore, it is justifiable to attempt a holistic method in investigating therelationship between different language parameters and interpreting assessmentresults.In addition, from the perspective of subjects, this study is carried out under the background of large-scale and professional interpreting test—TEM 8 Interpreting Test.Compared with the majority of present domestic studies in terms of interpretingquality, this should be one of the early attempts to use large scale test data. It is hopedthat TEM 8 Interpreting Test provides sufficient as well as reliable data by simulatinga significantly pressured consecutive interpreting environment.In this light, this study endeavors a holistic method to probe into thepredictability of certain language parameters on TEM 8 interpreting assessmentresults. To be more specific, this research studies 90 Chinese-English TEM 8interpreting performance records, develops 20 parameters out of grammar and lexicon,phonology and discourse and asks three questions about: a. the features of theseparameters across levels; b. their level-distinction ability; c. parameters that have thehighest predictability on interpreting assessment results.
