摘要:English teaching in China's middle school is conducted in Chineseenvironment, which is different from the language teaching abroad. To improve thequality of English teaching in secondary schools, it is essential to enhance thequality of classroom English teaching.

Chapter 1 Introduction


1.1 Background of the study
Foreign language classroom is the important place for teachers to carry outlanguage communication activities to develop students' language ability and skills.Organizing students to participate in various types of language communicativeactivities in the classroom is an effective means to promote language acquisition. Toaccomplish classroom tasks, participants —teachers and students in communicativeactivities are in an interactive state to make the two sides promote the smoothexchange of ongoing negotiation of meaning and interaction adjustment. Numerousstudies have demonstrated that if the students have the opportunity and time to usethe target language to communicate, it is possible to acquire target language throughmore meaningful use of language. Meaningful language output plays a vital role inthe Second Language Acquisition (Allwright1984; Ellis1990). In the process offoreign language classroom teaching, teacher talk is the main medium of instruction,and is also students’ important language input. The quality, quantity of teacher talk,and the distribution of the discourse timing are directly related to proceedingsmoothly of this interactive social process and the development of students'language ability. Kraker (2000) pointed out that the classroom teacher talk is one ofthe important ways to study the effect of classroom teaching.

1.2 Significance and purpose of the study
English teaching in China's middle school is conducted in Chineseenvironment, which is different from the language teaching abroad. To improve thequality of English teaching in secondary schools, it is essential to enhance thequality of classroom English teaching. Classroom teaching is the main form ofsecondary school English teaching. In the classroom, teachers play a leading roleand provide students with a lot of language input and a study guide, which makesclassroom teaching become an important channel for students to acquire languageinput. Language input plays an important role in foreign language learning andteacher talk is directly related to language input in classroom teaching, therefore, itis necessary to study the teacher talk in English teaching in secondary schools.Interaction is one of the main avenues of learning in the classroom. In thelanguage classroom, interactive role is particularly important. Interaction is the coreof communication (Brown, 1994), because it is not only the way to achieve learning,but also the purpose of learning (interaction is an important communicativecompetence itself). Classroom interaction has the following four functions: (1)improve students' classroom participation; (2) help students construct meaning in the process of negotiation of meaning; (3) help teachers and students, students andstudents exchange information; (4) help students experience the use of language,understand the meaning of language, and concern about language form.

2.1 Teacher talk
Based on the former studies reviewed, we can find that different definitionsof teacher talk have been reached from different perspectives abroad and at home.According to Longman Dictionary of Language Teaching and AppliedLinguistics (2005), teacher talk is “that variety of language sometimes used byteachers when they are in the process of teaching.
