Here the translator chooses “ 应” instead of “应该” or “应当”, because “应” is much more formal than the other two. And notify and assist means tell and help respectively. In Chinese, they can be translated into “告诉” and “帮助”. But here we cannot translate these two English words into that. We all understand that the purpose of business contracts is to regulate the parties’ rights and obligations in an equal level. “告诉” and “帮助” are too casual for a business contract. Therefore, “通知” and “协助” are the better choice. Besides, we should also pay attention to some terms when translating business contracts. Here, “irrevocable sight L/C” must be translated into “不可撤销的即期付款信用证”.

5.2.2 Appropriate translation of long sentences

“Compared with short sentences, long sentences appear solemn, grave, and formal; they are used in formal situation and written language, such as academic papers, government documentation, technical materials, meeting speech”(Wang & Ding, 1987:118). Business Contracts often employ a large number of long sentences in order to ensure the strict, rigorous and close characteristic. As we all know, English sentences are long and there is only one verb in one sentence. On the contrary, Chinese sentences are usually short and have several verbs at the same time. Hence, it is difficult to translate English business contracts into Chinese due to the difference of the two languages. As for the concrete approaches adopted in the translation of a typical English sentence, six techniques are available in translating long sentences in English: embedding, cutting, reversing, splitting, inserting and recasting (Xu, 2003: 163-168; Liu, 1985:157). The method of embedding is to place the modifiers before the core words. In English business contracts, the modifiers are mainly post-modifiers which should be rendered into pre-modifiers when translated into Chinese. For instance:

By means of cutting, we may sever a long English sentence, rearrange the parts in sense groups, and then translate them separately into Chinese (Xu, 2003: 164). For example:
