This example is taken from a correspondence responding to a customer’s unjustified complaint. The writer of the English business letter expresses his opinion in a mild and indirect way instead of stating directly that the customer is too critical. And the Chinese translation also employs the indirect method to express the idea of the original text.

4.2.3.3 Confirming Maxim

According to Gu, both Chinese confirming maxim and English agreement maxim refers to according with the other’s opinion, maximizing the agreement and minimizing the disagreement with the other. As we all know, Chinese people are often afraid of losing face. Since the maintaining of one’s own face depends on that of others to some extent, therefore Chinese people in most cases try to agree with others to satisfy others’ desires to enhance their positive face. Hence, translating Business English correspondence should combine Chinese confirming maxim and English agreement maxim together. For instance, “Thank you so much for your wonderful letter! It’s comments like yours that remind us why we at Grace Brothers enjoy coming to work.” (非常感谢您的来信，写的真是太好了!像您这样的指教正是我们葛瑞思兄弟公司的同事乐于工作的原动力。) The Chinese translation shows respect and politeness to the other company by expressing the agreement with the addressee. Besides, as I have mentioned the vague language before, when translating business letters, we should also pay attention to the translation of vague language and try to make our translation faithful and smooth.

5. Translation of Business Contract

We all understand that one necessary process of doing business is signing business contract, and a good understand and translation of business contract will no doubt ensure businessmen’s legal rights and therefore facilitate the smooth continuity of business exchanges. According to Law Dictionary which is written by Steven H. Gifts, contract is a promise, or a set of promises, for breach of which the law gives remedy, or the performance of which the law in some way recognize as a duty. And the definition of contract given by The Contract Law of the People’s Republic of China in 1999 is “contracts referred to in this law are agreements establishing, modifying and terminating the civil rights and obligations between subjects of equal footing, that is, between natural persons, legal persons or other organizations.” That is to say, a contract is an agreement, which legally binds the parties concerned.
