g effect of learner engagement.In this way,theinterpretation of the influence of teacher support has more theoretical basis.This study notonly explores the basic situation of student-perceived teacher support,English learnerengagement and academic performance,but also explores the mediating role of Englishlearner engagement in the influence of teacher support on academic performance.Therefore,it expands the research scope of teacher support and learner engagement to a certain extent,and makes the research more in-depth and detailed.At the same time,it also promotes thedevelopment of the theory of teacher support perceived by junior middle school students.

Chapter 2 Literature Review

2.1 Teacher Support

In the classroom learning environment,the teacher occupies a central position.Teachersare able to put educational ideas into practice and also provide beneficial guidance to studentsin the learning process.Moreover,teacher support is an important manifestation of positiveteacher behaviour.This is because student-perceived teacher support helps students to receivebetter guidance and is more conducive to student learning.For instance,Wentzel's study(1997)found that positive relationships between students and teachers promoted thedevelopment of pro-social goals,such as getting along with other students.Teacher supportalso influenced students'interests to a greater extent than parental support and peer support.Thus,given the uniqueness and significance of teacher support,this study will use teachersupport as a starting point to investigate how it affects students'language learningachievement.

2.1.1 Definition of Teacher Support

For young people,learning mainly takes place at school,so teachers are the mostimportant source of support for students.It means a lot to students that teachers give themsome guidance in their studies and adequate care in their school life(Sakiz,Pape&Hoy,2012).Trickett and Moos(1973)first put forward the concept of teacher support,which istaken from social support.They considered teacher support to be the student's perception ofthe care and assistance provided by the teacher.Many studies have revealed that students'perception of their teachers'support influences their engagement in learning,motivation,andacademic success(Goodenow,1993;Reyes et al.,2012).

2.2 Learner Engagement

The concept of learner engagement has emerged with the rise of positive psychology andhas gradually become a hot topic of research and concern for foreign scholars.Overseasresearch on learner engagement has become mature.Research on learner engagement startedlate in China,and scholars in China have conducted localized research based on foreignresearch findings.Learner engagement is a core concept in educational psychology and a vitaltopic in educational research.Since the concept was introduced,scholars have conductedprofound discussions on learner engagement from many perspectives.To research learnerengagement,we must first clarify the concept of learner engagement.

2.2.1 Definition of Learner Engagement
