Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Research Background

The introduction part forms a preliminary understanding of the main problems ofthis research through the explanation of the research background, research purposeand significance as well as the framework of the paper.

1.1.1 The current needs of cultural awareness training

Today, with China playing an increasingly important role in the internationalcommunity, the teaching of cultural knowledge should aim at promoting the formationand development of students' cultural consciousness. Through compulsory Educationcourses, students have accumulated a lot of knowledge about Chinese and foreigncultures. After entering high school, they will further expand the scope of learningabout Chinese and foreign cultures, enrich the learning content, and gradually learn totell Chinese stories in English.

Like language, culture permeates human life and is the most important tool forhuman to express their thoughts and emotions. Neither teachers nor students areaware of the important influence of cultural knowledge on foreign language learning.The teaching of cultural knowledge and the cultivation of cultural consciousness havenot been developed and paid attention to. At present, the current situation of Chinesemiddle school students cultural awareness: most middle school students have awidespread lack of awareness of Chinese traditional culture, and little knowledge ofthe social and cultural customs and etiquette of English-speaking countries. They areunable to use English cultural thinking and values to understand and use English.Generally speaking, they have insufficient understanding of Chinese and foreigncultures. In 2014, the Ministry of Education of China issued Opinions onComprehensively Deepening Curriculum Reform and Implementing the FundamentalTask of Educating Talents by Standing for Moral Values, which clearly proposed the concept of core literacy and placed it in the basic position of deepening curriculumreform and implementing the goal of Educating Talents by Standing for Moral Values.It is also pointed out that core quality refers to the essential character and key abilitythat students should have to meet the needs of life-long development and socialdevelopment.

1.2 Research objectives and significance

The purpose of this study is to explore how to enhance cultural awarenessthrough English teaching to alleviate the current situation of China’s middle schoolstudents’ cultural awareness problems.

It is the intercultural cognition, attitude and behavioral orientation of studentsunder the background of globalization. Most middle school students have thetendency of lack of cognition, interest and awareness of traditional Chinese culture.They have no interest in the excellent traditional Chinese culture, such as traditionalvirtues, traditional festivals, literary classics, poems and poems. They have littleknowledge of the social and cultural customs, etiquette and common sense ofEnglish-speaking countries, and They cannot use English cultural thinking and valuesto understand and use English.
