Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Background of the study
Chinese companies are an important business card of China on the international stage,animportant subject in the pattern of national external publicity,and a force that cannot beignored in China’s international communication.With the deepening of China’s economicinternationalization,more and more Chinese companies are going to the world.A goodcorporate image overseas is conducive to the display of the national image,and a goodinternational communication work is more important for the healthy and sustainabledevelopment of Chinese companies overseas.
In the deepening process of economic globalization,companies have become one of theimportant subjects of international communication.How to tell the story of Chinesecompanies well,innovate international communication and promote cultural exchanges anddialogue among different civilizations are important issues facing China.In such anunprecedented environment,in order to seek more international discourse power,companieshave become one of the diversified international communication subjects,among which theinternational communication of companies has been highly valued by countries all over theworld.Therefore,the importance of corporate identity construction is obvious to all.
1.2 Purpose and significance of the study
According to the 2022 Fortune Global 500 list,the revenues of China’s top 500companies grew at a high rate in 2022.Total revenue reached 102.48 trillion yuan,surpassingthe one trillion yuan mark for the first time,an increase of 12.65 trillion yuan or 14.08%overthe previous year’s top 500 companies.The threshold for entry has risen for the 20th year in arow and are at a 20-year high.Among them,China National Offshore Oil Group,ShandongEnergy Group,and China National Energy Group,which are among the top 100 of the 2022Fortune List and have their English official websites,are selected as research objects in thispaper.The three companies selected for this paper are all companies with strong strength andinternational influence in the energy sector,so the research objects in this paper arerepresentative and typical to a certain extent.Reviewing the existing studies at home andabroad,there is a lack of research on energy companies in China.In addition,the research oncorporate identity construction through discourse-historical analysis of corporate newsdiscourse is still insufficient.Theoretically,this study enriches the study of Chinese energycompany news discourse from the perspective of discourse-historical approach and opens up aprecedent for the discourse-historical approach of energy company news discourse.
