4.1 Xiaojing and Its Two English Versions

This thesis takes Xiaojing for example,because it is a well-known Chineseclassic with rich cultural connotation.Although it has been translated by manytranslators in different countries and eras,there are still lots of disadvantages.So theauthor chooses the two prominent English versions with good sales and highreputation:Jame Legge’version and Rosemont and Ames’version.Through thecomparative analysis,the advantages and limitations of the two English versions willbe found out.

4.1.1 A Brief Introduction to Xiaojing

Xiaojing is one of the thirteen traditional Chinese classics,and it occupies animportant position in the traditional Chinese cultural system.It has only 1799characters in length,which is the least in Confucian classics,but its historicalinfluence is far-reaching.It is known as the confluence of the Six Confucian Classicsand has become the first choice for children’s enlightenment education after the HanDynasty.For a long time,the thought of Xiaojing has penetrated into all aspects ofChinese society,from the national laws and social relations controlled by the rulers tothe daily life and customs of ordinary people.The culture of“xiao”has permeatedinto every aspect of life of the Chinese people and casts the distinctive character ofthe Chinese nation(Huang Wanfeng&Huang Weiwei,2011:3).

5.1 Major Findings of the Study

Reception Theory was first brought to China in the late 1980s and has been putin widespread use in translation studies since then.Some important concepts ofreception theory such as horizon of expectations,fusion of horizons,aestheticdistance and indeterminacy provide new inspirations for translation studies.Thisthesis has made a comparative study on the two English versions of Xiaojingtranslated respectively by James Legge and by Rosemont and Ames from the fouraspects of reception theory.
