Chapter Two An Overview of Theories of Intertextuality

2.1 The Theoretical Basis of Intertextuality

The origin of the theory of intertextuality begin with the ideological revolution periodof the“linguistic turn”of the humanities in the 1950s.Originally,Saussure definedlinguistic symbols in his 1915 Course in General Linguistics as:“A sign can be imaginedas a two-sided coin combining a signified(concept)and a signifier(sound,image)”(Allen,2000:8).A symbol is not a word’s reference to some object in the world but a combinationof the signifier and the signified.Symbol is arbitrary and exists in a synchronic linguisticsystem in which it does not stand alone but is related to a series of related sounds andwords, combining processes along the assemblage axis of language generated by theselection process of the sum and aggregation axes. Thus, the meanings produced and foundin language are interrelated;they depend on the processes of association with othersymbols within the system of differences in the language itself. The meaning of thissymbol and general language influenced all areas of human science in the twentieth century.Consequently, there was a wave of revolutionary re-description of human culture from theperspective of symbolic systems.

If Saussure’s semiotic theory is one of the origins of intertextuality, then the Russianliterary theorist Bakhtin also furthered the development of this idea.Bakhtin took acompletely different approach to language, advocating an interactive understanding of textsin which all linguistic communication takes place within a specific social context, specificclasses and groups of language users. He sees the expressions in the text as the result of theintersection, penetration and dialogue of many voices. So Kristeva said that although thetheory of intertextuality was not directly proposed by Bakhtin,it could be directly derivedfrom his works.

2.2 The Main Branches of Intertextuality

The theory of intertextuality was born in France in the 1960s.Julia Kristeva was thefirst person to coin the term and explain the theory of intertextuality, and after theextensive research of her teacher Roland Barthes, intertextuality theory had a wide impactin the academic community. It has been appropriated by Structuralism,Post-structuralism,Deconstructivism,New Historicism,Feminism and so on,and gradually developed into amature and important critical concept. There are two main branches of the theory ofintertextuality. One is Kristeva’s intertextuality in the broad sense, the other is Genette’sintertextuality in the narrow sense.

2.2.1 Kristeva’s Intertextuality in the Broad Sense

As a textual theory arising from the contemporary western postmodernist culturaltrend, intertextuality theory is usually used to indicate the intertextual relationship thatexists between two or more texts. This concept was originally proposed by the Frenchsemiotician and feminist critic Julia Kristeva in her paper“Word,Dialogue, and Novel”.She proposes that“any text is constructed as a mosaic of quotations;any text is theabsorption and transformation of another. The notion of intertextuality replaces that ofintersubjectivity, and poetic language is read 论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
