1.1 Introduction to Gloria Naylor and Her Works

英语文学论文题目怎么写

Gloria Naylor is a well-known contemporary black female writer in the United States.During the last two decades of the 20th century,Naylor, along with many contemporaryAfrican-American women writers, made outstanding contributions to redefining newdevelopments in American literature. Her quartet of novels centered on black women,TheWomen of Brewster Place,Mama Day,Linden Hills,Bailey’s Cafe, can be regarded as bothindependent and interconnected. These together with another male-focused novel,The Menof Brewster Place, have garnered a lot of attention from readers, cementing her importantplace in the American literary world.

Naylor’s parents decided before her birth in 1950 that their children should not beborn in any of the states of the segregated South.Naylor’s mother was determined not toraise any child of hers in her native Mississippi for fear of limited opportunities forEducational growth and advancement(Wilson,2001:1).So Naylor’s parents set out forNew York in December 1949 in search of better jobs and a more fulfilling life.Born in thesouth and reared in the north, her family’s southern lineage and the northern adaptationhave shaped the unique critical perspective found in her writing.Meanwhile,as acommitted Jehovah’s Witness,a seven-year missionary journey enabled Naylor to conducta profound exploration of human nature and different living environments. She alsoobserved firsthand the living conditions of various women and witnessed the tragicexperiences of underprivileged women. These experiences provided the ultimate resourcesfor her subsequent works. Therefore she incorporated what she saw and experienced intoher own writing, publishing her first novel The Women of Brewster Place in 1982.

1.2 Literature Review

Gloria Naylor is one of the most influential living African-American women writers. Her first novel,The Women of Brewster Place, came out in 1982,winning the NationalBook Award for Best Debut.Countless Western scholars and critics have focused theirattention on this greenhand female writer, for she changed traditional form and linearnarrative, focused on the living conditions of group women, and was committed torevealing the universality of black women.

1.2.1 Domestic Studies of the Two Gloria Naylor Novels

Domestic studies of Naylor are in a fledgling state. To be specific, research is mainly divided into the following points:space and fiction;sisterhood;artistic features;traumaand redemption;and comparative analysis.

Both Wang Weina(2018)and Zhang Nan(2020)have paid attention to the spaceproblem in the novel. In the paper“Consolation,Pain and Solidarity:Spatial Metaphors inThe Women of Brewster Place”published in Journal of Lanzhou Institute of Education,Wang Weina discusses the symbolic meaning of Brewster Place encoded under thephysical space based on spatial theory, and Naylor’s construction of spatial metaphors canhelp construct the self-identity of African-American women in the face of racial andgender issues.Zhang Nan’s“Women’s Escape under Spatial Theory-The Women ofBrewster Place”published in English Square mainly analyzes the escape of the characterMattie from the perspe论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
