6.1 Major Findings

Naylor’s works are known for her delicate descriptions,imaginative plots,ingeniousarrangements of structures,and special narrative techniques.The close connection betweenNaylor’s two novels,as well as the repetition and subversion of the post-text to the pretext,lay the foundation for its research on intertextuality.Intertextual theory focuses on theintricate relationship between text and other texts,text and social environment,culture,ideology,as well as readers and critics.Therefore,this thesis,supported by related theories,chose to explore the intertextuality of Naylor’s two novels,created ten years apart,with aspecial view to the writer’s creative process and the significance and influence of hercreation.

The paratextuality of the two texts is very rich and explains and reflects Naylor’singenious conception of her own works.The paratexts in the two novel point to both theclever arrangement within the text and the quotations and allusions outside the text tohighlight the profound connotation of the novels.The paratext and the main body text arenot separate entities,but form a unified whole.From the paratext,one can discern apreliminary understanding of the novel.

The similarities between the two works in terms of the reflection of the theme,theportrayal of the characters,and the narrative techniques lay the foundation for theintertextual relationship between the two novels.In the post-text,Naylor realizes her ownproficient creation of black women’s novels by repeating the themes,characters andnarratives in the pretext.However,through the accumulation of ten years of creativeexploration and life experience,Naylor repeats the pretext while subverting andaugmenting the pretext in the post-text.The repetition and subversion advocated byintertextuality is reflected between the two texts.
