Tennessee Williams occupies an important place in the history of Americanliterature,impressing readers with his exquisite emotions and delicate writingtechniques.His plays have been adapted and presented on stages around the world,which demonstrates their extraordinary artistic charms.The Glass Menagerie is sofar-reaching in both content and art form that it has received widespread attention sinceits appearance in 1944,and scholars and critics at home and abroad have interpreted itfrom various perspectives.However,they have overlooked the dual narrativeprogression existing in the play and the deeper-level meaning that Williams intends toconvey based on the dual narrative progression.Moreover,few studies combinenarrative techniques with the theme of trauma in previous studies on The GlassMenagerie.In fact,many narrative techniques are ways of exploring and presentingcharacters’psychology in Tennessee Williams’works.

In the first place,this thesis discusses the dual narrative progression constructed byWilliams in The Glass Menagerie.In overt narrative progression,Williams narratesthat the Wingfields avoid confronting their respective traumas and live with theirtraumas hopelessly throughout their lives.From a review of Williams’life experiencesand a close reading of the text,this thesis finds that there is a covert narrativeprogression behind the overt narrative progression,which runs alongside the overtnarrative progression from the beginning to the end of the play.In the covert narrativeprogression,Williams narrates that the Wingfields try to face and heal their traumas,either through self-empowerment or help from others.The two narrative progressionsare subversive of each other,interacting to express profound thematic meaning,createrich characterizations and reveal deep psychology of characters.
