1.1 Motivation of the study
Lin Yu-tang, "straddling over eastern and western cultures and commenting on theliterature in the universe" ， is reputed as "the man of wisdom in the 20th century" , "acultural ambassador" and "an authentic world citizen" ， which made him a very typicalcase of Chinese culture disseminated in the West through his numerous works written inEnglish, among which My Country and My People, The Importance of Living, Moment inPeking are the representatives. (7(?志强，2011) Lin spread Chinese culture by his masteryof both English and Chinese, which enables western readers to get a closer picture ofChinese society and culture, demonstrating the cultural disparity through interaction withthe readers,Lin created most of his novels in English and some famous biographies of ancientChinese personalities. The Gay Genius: The Life and Times ofSu Tungpo, the biographythe author of this dissertation is going to discuss, was considered one of the most wellreceived biographies in the 20**^ century in English-speaking world. Readers both at homeand abroad are provided with this opportunity to appreciate this famous poet in thehistory of China through Lin Yu-tang's depiction. What's more, through the translationsof The Gay Genius: The Life and Times ofSu Tungpo, readers who have not read or donot have what it takes to appreciate the original book, are given this option to see howLin described the life and times of Su Tong-po.Back translation is a very prominent feature in the translation of Lin's literary worksin English. Back-translation here refers to the restoration of the translated work into theoriginal one. When creating literary works in English, the writers who write Chinesesubjects are actually transposing a culture―to be understood as a language, a cognitivesystem, a literature, a material culture, a social system and legal framework, a history,and so forth. That is, the Chinese culture or tradition acts as a mctatext that isrewritten―explicitly and implicitly―in the literary creations of these writers. 1.2 Significance of studyI
n the first place, back translation is sometimes used in contrastive linguistics as atechnique for comparing specific syntactic, morphological or lexical features from two ormore languages.
