Venturing into the depth of his mind,Thomas may also see the horrific abyss hauntingyoung Tillich:“O abyss without ground, dark depths of madness!/Would that I had nevergazed upon you and were sleeping like a child”(qtd.in Cooper 39).Tillich was desperate fora Ground. On the horizon of his pilgrimage,Thomas similarly sees man’s intelligence asreflecting and interpreting the world;he also sees his own face in the mind-mirror,animportant image in Thomas’s poems.William Davis has summarized four types of mirror inThomas’s poems—the“human mirrors,”the literal mirror as pools of water, the paintings asmirror, and also the most important one from which“reflection”comes from(74).Davisresorts to Levinas’s philosophy of“the Other”as a possible explanation for Thomas’s fourthkind of mirror,in which one can see an Other as both the self and other,or a literal Other, oran Other that may well be God(82-83).Therefore,Davis is positive in the possible revelationof the other’s face, and expects the presence of the other as an absence emerging in the mirrorof Thomas’s mind(83).The mind-mirror,in Davis’s opinion, becomes a window affordingman a glimpse of God’s visage through the working of human mind. This promisinginterpretation is consistent with Thomas’s insistence to find God“in here”and“right now”rather than“out there.”However,a tension exists between the possibility to see God in one’smind-mirror and the reality of failing to polish the looking-glass clouded by the breath fromthe mysterious one standing behind(CP 353).

Conclusion

As the“Alexander Solzhenitsyn of Wales”and a representative Welsh poet,R.S.Thomas is so troubled by the disuse of the Welsh language and the withering Welsh spirit.Welsh poets are not well-known in China compared with those household names such asShakespeare,Eliot, and Yeats and so on.Their“silence”in China is not a result of theirfalling short of talent or penetrating insight but a critical negligence.Descending from theCeltics in Europe,Welsh people have suffered no less than those homeless wonderingsouls—the Israelites.Their pride as descendants of the Celtic evaporates in the intense heat ofEnglish ruling.Thomas spares no efforts to describe Wales in his poems:Welsh landscape,Welsh people, and Welsh culture. At the beginning of his career, his muse inspires him todraw nourishment from his roots in Wales even though Thomas was brought up speakingEnglish and spent most of his time with English-speaking community in college beforebecoming an Anglican priest. All of his life Thomas tries to embrace Welsh:thepushing-and-pulling he undergoes in regard to identity is a great impact upon his poetrywriting.

Apart from his Welsh cultural nostalgia,Thomas is also absorbed i论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
