2.2 Previous Studies on LDC

Since the proposition of left dislocation,a number of linguists have madeintensive studies of it from different points of view,which can be generally dividedinto three approaches:the generative approach,the functional approach and thecognitive approach.

2.2.1 Generative Approach to LDC

The studies about left dislocation construction can be traced back to Ross in 1967.Ross(1967)proposes a rule that is very similar to topicalization in his doctoraldissertation Constraints on Variables in Syntax,and he called it left dislocation.Hereckons that in this syntactic structure,just like the movement process involved inTopicalization,a syntactic constituent is moved out of a sentence,but leaves a copy inits original location where it moves away from.

Quirk,et al.(1985),who is the first one to give a thorough and comparably earlierdescription of left dislocation and originally made a distinction between two sorts oflanguage structures.The first one is nowadays called right dislocation construction,inwhich a pronominal element is placed earlier in the sentence and the coreferential nounphrase is arranged at the end of the sentence as an amplificatory tag.On the contrary,the other one is nowadays called left dislocation construction,in which the noun phraseor preposition phrase is placed initially while a pronominal element is positioned in the original position.Shown as the sentences below:
