Abstract:

People are part of every business process and are a critical part in delivering the quality of the products and services. Due to this, it is very expensive when a person becomes injured or is ill for this affects directly on the time that person gives to a certain work and the loss of cost of the valuable services provided by him or her. If work is performed in awkward postures using excessive effort, fatigue and discomfort may be the result. Muscles, tendons, nerves and blood vessels may be damaged under these conditions, hence musculoskeletal disorders. To reduce and prevent injuries in the office, business managers and owners use ergonomics as a vital tool. This is possible for the work is adopted to fit the person doing it instead of the person adopting to fit the work. This ensures that the barriers that exist that prevent employees from performing to the best of their abilities in many work places are removed to enhance work performance. This requires input from all the staff of all levels to achieve good work environments which are effective, efficient and more productive.

Introduction

The discipline of changing one's work environment to make the body comfortable and healthy is known as ergonomics. Ergonomics is a wide discipline and has been studied for more than 50 years and has acquired some synonyms in the due course. The term ergonomics has been used interchangingly with human engineering and or human factors. This discipline has been incorporated to be part of safety in the place of work. Problems associated with Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI) are eliminated by proper understanding of ergonomics.

In the place of work, ergonomics is with reference to bad posture while working with a computer than any other device in the place of work. RSI is an analysis that that includes carpal tunnel syndrome deQuervain's syndrome, tennis elbow, ulna nerve entrapment and tendonitis.

Some of the aspects giving rise to RSI are tension of the muscles, physical fitness, bad ergonomics, static posture, inadequate breaks and work habits.
