摘要:Verb is quite important in English. There must be a verb in one sentence, so some peoplecall it “the heart” of the sentence. We divide English verbs into finite verbs and non-finite verbs.As is known to all, non-finite verb is one of the most important and difficult parts in Englishgrammars.

Part One Introduction


English learning is a long way of internalization. China is not an exception, but thelearners cannot avoid committing errors in the whole process of learning. As there are manylanguage and cultural differences between Chinese and English, Chinese English learners have alot of difficulties in learning English. In the past, teacher plays an important role in languagelearning. They teach the students how to use those language rules to read, write, and speak, andso on. This kind of teacher-centered teaching method is very traditional. With the development ofapplied linguistics and psycholinguistics, the focus on foreign and second language teaching haschanged from the teacher controlled view to a more student centered view. That is to say, weshould pay more attention to learners' behaviors in their second language acquisition, includingtheir psychological situations.Definitely, language learning is like any other human learning which involves error-making.We should not only correct their errors but also find out the reasons of making those errors. Thisthesis is based on contrastive analysis and error analysis, concentrating on Chinese Englishlearners’ errors in the use of non-finite verbs.According to a small test and a survey, this paper focuses on some aspects in which they getused to making errors and the causes of these errors. This study aims to reveal the problems ofusing non-finite verbs. And it will hopefully give some suggestions on non-finite verbs teaching.

1.1 Purpose of the Study
Verb is quite important in English. There must be a verb in one sentence, so some peoplecall it “the heart” of the sentence. We divide English verbs into finite verbs and non-finite verbs.As is known to all, non-finite verb is one of the most important and difficult parts in Englishgrammars. Because English and Chinese belong to different language families (English belongsto the Indo-European language family, while Chinese belongs to the Sino-Tibetan languagefamily), there are great differences in using verbs between them. In order to have a clearunderstanding of these differences, studying non-finite verb errors is of great help for Chineselearners in the course of English learning.Chinese English learners often speak or write Chinglish in English sentence structures.Influenced by their mother tongue, they use two verbs in one single English sentence becausethey forget that there must be only one core verb in English single sentence. Here we aresupposed to use non-finite verbs to take the place of predicate form. The redundancy ofpredicates is the best evidence of this kind of error. Thus, it is quite necessary to find more effective approaches to help learners achieve better understanding of non-finite verbs.Based on a self-built investigation, this thesis aims to figure out the causes of errors whichoccur in Chinese learners’ learning and find some ways of solving these problems.
