Chapter One Literature Review
1.1 Concepts of Cohesion and Vocabulary Teaching
To study vocabulary teaching cohesion in junior and senior high schools, it is important to understand the concept of cohesion and vocabulary teaching, so as to further understand vocabulary teaching cohesion.
1.1.1 Definition of Cohesion
The word 'cohesion' is interpreted in the dictionary as the joining of things at the beginning and end. Within the 17th century, the Czech educator Comenius proposed the world's first cohered single-track school system in The Great Theory of Teaching. In 1996, China issued the 'Notice on the Cohesion of the Current Teaching of Mathematics and English in High Schools and the Curriculum Reform Program for Compulsory Education in Junior High Schools', the term 'cohesion' was used for the first time to reflect the interconnection of two different learning stages. Thereafter, theories and practices on the concept of teaching cohesion have started to appear in large numbers.
Whether it is the early childhood phase to primary education cohesion, the junior high school cohesion or the senior high schools-college cohesion, it is an essential stage in education. With the introduction of the concept of educational cohesion, schools and teachers, academics and others have advocated and demanded changes. However, the compact curriculum and the substantial number of students make it challenging for faculty to cover all students. At the same time, the definition of cohesion by educational institutions is 'early learning', not true cohesion, although this phenomenon has been alleviated after the 'double reduction' policy was introduced.
1.2 The status of research of vocabulary teaching cohesion from junior to senior high schools’ English teaching
The current state of research at home and abroad is an overview of this research, which enables the reader to understand the research process in a short time. The reader can easily understand the research process quickly.
1.2.1 The status of research at home
After students move from junior high schools to senior high schools, they have a good foundation in English and have mastered the basic vocabulary. However, there are still some students who cannot reach the level required to enter senior high schools due to differences in schools teaching resources. Because they who do not have a solid enough English foundation and vocabulary, especially some students at mid-level schools. This situation also leads to senior high schools’ English teachers being exhausted about teaching in the early part of the schools’ year because of the different starting points of their students. Junior high schools’ teachers rarely extend their teaching content because they do not know the senior high schools’ curriculum relatively. In the long-term, the content of vocabulary teaching in junior schools cannot be properly connected with that of senior high schools, which will hinder the development of students' vocabulary learning ability and interest.
