摘要:The first one is concerned with the vocabulary acquisition in the classroom setting inChina. As a teacher in junior middle schools, the author has been teaching English for a wholesemester in No. 43 middle school in Taiyuan.
2.2 Vocabulary acquisition
With the development of all kinds of teaching approaches, vocabulary becomes moreand more important in foreign language teaching. The acquisition of an adequate vocabularyis essential for successful foreign language communication. Without adequate vocabulary, thestructures and functions could not be put into use for comprehensible communication.“No widely accepted definition of vocabulary level has been established so far. and theterms "vocabulary knowledge*, ‘lexical knowledge", ?vocabulary ability* and lexicalcompetence' have been used largely in the L2 vocabulary acquisition literature" (Henriksen1999 & Meara, 1996). Definitions of vocabulary level can be divided into narrow definitions and dimensionaldefinitions at the beginning, now many researchers hold the view that vocabulary is consistedof several dimensions and levels. Richard lists eight assumptions which cover various types ofvocabulary knowledge. In Richard's view, “what is involved in knowing a word is: frequency,register, syntax, derivation, association, semantic feature" (Richard, 1976). However, thelimitation is pronunciation and spellings are the missing parts in that framework.Nation (1990) develop Richard's eight assumptions. He adds a receptive/productivedistinction. In his book Learning Vocabulary in Another Language, Nation (2001) dividesword knowledge into: form, meaning and use. Each item is consisted of Productive andreceptive aspects. Take spoken for example, receptive one is described as "What does theword sound like?,,while productive one is regarded as “How is the word pronounced?"
