摘要:This thesis will set the communication between China and western countries as abackground to illustrate the exact influence of English loanwords on Chinese on thebasis of the theory of language contact.
Chapter 5 Attitudes towards English Loanwords
5.1 Positive Attitude towards English Loanwords
English loanwords in Chinese exhibit two dual features, on the one hand, theyreveal the characteristic of alien culture; on the other hand, they are to some extentinfluenced by Chinese, embodying some Chinese characteristics. Whether Englishloanwords represent the meaning of the words or its way of pronunciation, theypossess more or less some alien features. As a result, most of English loanwords canbe easily recognized in Chinese words, forming its unique category of word. Withmore and more borrowed words and its complicated structural forms absorbed intoChinese, these unique words are bound to exert great influence on the existingvocabulary system of Chinese. Most of the words in ancient Chinese are monosyllabic and the single-morphemewords were initially borrowed from the West and Sanskrit in Han and Tang Dynasty. With the history going on, many single-morpheme words with polysyllables werebecoming simplified, and even extinctive.

When our social life is changinggradually or suddenly, language is bound to change with the pace of social life, thusforming a unique style resonating with the spiritual of the time. For the time being, there doesn't exist any Chinese-English contact in a situation where both languagesare used. Additionally, as for the use of amount of English loanwords, the influence ofthose on Chinese is mainly in written part rather than oral part. Therefore,Chinese-English contact belongs to the indirect type of language contact, whichlargely gives rise to the borrowing of English vocabularies into Chinese, thus greatlyenriching the number of Chinese vocabulary. In the contemporary society, Englishloanwords are almost involved into every field, ranging from advanced science andtechnology, concepts and objects to our daily life in every aspect. In this way is theChinese vocabulary expanded largely and rapidly. In this paper, loanwords are divided into four types, that is semantic loans, hybrid forms, loan blends and phonetic loans. Among those types, a large number ofEnglish loanwords are occurring in the media and some have been registered bydictionaries.
