摘要:The importance of vocabulary in a language strongly suggests that in teaching aforeign language it is necessary to put vocabulary in a focal place. However, thepresent situation of vocabulary teaching and learning in the English classroom insenior high school is far from satisfaction.
2.2 Previous Studies on Word association strategies at home and abroad
The earliest researches about word association strategies in the foreign countriesdate back to the 19thcentury. And from then on, this kind of vocabulary memorystrategy has drawn greater attention from many linguists, such as Kent, Miler, Cookand so on. For example, Richards (1976) once put forward a hypothesis that words arestored or recollected according to the associative bonds. He holds the opinion that ifthe associative bonds can be established, they will foster learning. Later with thedevelopment of cognitive Psychology and linguistics, psychology linguists haveproved that words are not stored in memory isolated from each other, but stored inmemory buy sound or classifications, which is similar to Richards’ opinion.Psychology linguists emphasized that words are associated with each other in form,sound or meaning from the word group of association in memory (Carter & McCarthy,1988), which means knowing one of them will foster the association with the others inthe same word group. Since words are stored in the network of association, if a newword is integrated into the network, the association relationship will assist not only inmemorizing this word but also deepening the comprehension of its meaning. Theresult of the lexical association experiment carried out by Freedman & Loftus (1971)also prove the opinion.
