Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Research Background
Memetics, which produce from the idea of Darwinian Evolution, is the theory model of newexplanation for culture evolution. In memetics, the key term is meme. Richard Dawkins, a famousbehavioral ecologist and zoologist at the Oxford University, firstly came up with the conception of meme.It comes from The Selfish Gene in 1976. According to Richard Dawkins, meme is the basic unit of culturaltransmission, all cultural transmission through meme to complete. Meme is simply equal to imitation. Themain characters of meme are imitation, duplication and transmission. As professor of He Ziran oncepointed that meme is everywhere in our daily life. The appearance and transmission of some phenomenonare all regarded as the consequence of meme affection. ( He Ziran, 2005,54-64)As the basic unit of cultural transmission, meme depends on duplication and transmission to survive. The one of the carrier is the language. Although meme depends on language to duplicate and transmit,Meme is in favor of the development of language. The memetics of language closely combine memeticswith language learning. During the language learning, we imitate constantly words, sentences, paragraphsand passages to improve language level. In other words, all elements you can imitate in language learningare meme. For example, the using habit, culture and the idea of language all become meme. The sentencesare said by the first person, and imitated by many people. These sentences become meme. (WangLi,2011,13-14). Meme is closely related to language. Language memetics survey mainly language andother phenomena from memetics perspective. Language memetics which not only reveal the law oflanguage development , but also provide new study perspective for linguistics and language teaching, arenew theory of pragmatics.
