Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
The teachingobjectives of senior high school put forward newer and higher requirements forEnglish course which is as one of the important basic courses in senior high school,and also make clear further the requirement of developing and cultivating sustainablystudents’ English comprehensive ability. However, with the current teaching methods,there are some conflicts to achieve the goal.Traditional senior high school education in China regards teaching the basicprofessional knowledge as the goal, and pays attention to English teaching theory andignores the role of practice. Teaching method is single, “cramming”, and focuses onthe rigid vocabulary, phrases, grammar. Teaching process is more uniform, ignores thecharacteristics of senior high school students so as to make students lack theautonomous learning ability, cooperative ability, cognitive ability and practice abilityand influence the realization of the applied talents training goal. The author thinks that,to strengthen the English teaching in senior high school, the English teachers and researchers should give priority to exploring the new and feasible English teachingmethod instead of applying the traditional teaching mode.The project-based approach based on the theory of constructivism puts theknowledge teaching into the discipline system and trains students’ comprehensiveability as the teaching standard. The teaching method pays attention to the principalposition of students and the cultivation of comprehensive ability which can haveinfluence on the current English teaching method reform in the senior high school.

1.2 Significance of the Study
English writing course as an important part of English curriculum, has thecharacteristics of strong practicality and comprehensiveness. Therefore, thepracticability of English writing teaching should focus on communication and aim atpromoting learners’ abilities of using language and English communication. Butinfluenced by the traditional exam-oriented education system in our country, manyEnglish teachers have adopted simplification, exam-oriented English writing teachingmode and the teaching content lacks practicality. The traditional teaching model ontraining students’ practical application ability is poor, so the traditional English courseis very difficult to cultivate qualified inter-disciplinary talents. However,project-based approach can significantly improve students’ practical ability, creativeability and comprehensive ability, and meet the needs of today’s society. The paperhelps the traditional English writing teaching solve the inherent shortcomings, so ithas a certain practical significance.In addition, the project-based approach as a new teaching method in Europeanand American countries is widely researched. In contrast, domestic studies onproject-based approach are conducted on the basis of the foreign experience and onlyat the starting stage. Therefore, how to apply the project-based approach in Englishteaching effectively needs further research and discussions.
