ce on an approved ACCESS
programme. Like other applicants, mature-age
candidates being actively considered for a
place will normally be called for interview.
Part-time Students
Although the vast majority of undergraduates
at UCL study full-time, a small number
complete their degree by studying part-time
over a longer period. Students interested in
this route should note that the majority of
teaching at UCL takes place during the day
and therefore may be difficult for those
wishing to combine study with a full-time job.
Not all departments offer part-time study as
an option and interested students should
contact the relevant departmental admissions
tutors (pages 24 to 165).
Disabled Students
UCL is firmly committed to operating a system
of equal opportunity, and applicants with
disabilities or medical conditions are
considered on the same basis as all other
applicants. In order to facilitate any reasonable
adjustments necessary, applicants are advised
to contact the Disability Co-ordinator indicating
their proposed field of study and what their
needs might be. The design of some of UCL’s
older buildings may make it difficult for
wheelchair users and individuals with mobility
difficulties to study in certain departments.
Early enquiries are encouraged. An
information visit can also be arranged to
provide applicants with the opportunity to find
out for themselves about facilities and support
for disabled students at UCL.
The Disability Centre provides information and
advice for all UCL disabled students and
organises appropriate support services such
as note-taking, communication support and
mentoring. The Disability Centre also assists
students with applications for the Disabled
Students Allowances. The Dyslexia
Assessment and Support Centre provides
diagnostic assessments of dyslexia and other
specific learning difficulties and study skills
tuition. UCL Disability Services also include the
Student Enabling Information Technology
Suite which is equipped with a range of
specialist equipment and software.
Further information can be found at
www.ucl.ac.uk/disability. An information
booklet is available on request.

Mature and Part-time Students|Disabled Students An Introduction to UCL
Mature and Part-time Students
Disabled Students
Paul Spong is a recent graduate from the
Faculty of Laws. He writes:
UCL is one of the UK’s top institutions to
study law. It has excellent library facilities, with
extensive subject resources.
As a wheelchair user with cerebral palsy, the
older buildings of the university presented some
problems for getting around; however, new
facilities (such as automatic doors) have been
installed, which have made it much easier. I also
used the Student Enabling IT (SEnIT) Suite.
The staff at UCL were all very supportive of me.
The Disability Co-ordinator always ensured that
appropriate facilities were provided, and that
they were repaired as quickly as possible in the
event of a breakdown. The Law Faculty staff
were also very helpful in reorganising the
location of my seminars and lectures when I was
unable to get to the original locations.
