Living and Studying in London
With over seven million inhabitants, London is not only one of
the biggest cities in Europe but has an extra dimension not
found in any other city in the United Kingdom.
Life in London – The Student View
Susannah La-Touche, a recently graduated medical student,
gives her views:
Living in London is undoubtedly an exhilarating experience and,
with its wealth of entertainment and activities to suit all tastes,
there is never a dull moment.
London’s theatres, museums, cinemas, galleries, gigs, comedy
venues, restaurants, bars and (lest we forget) shops provide a
plethora of amusements and distractions. And the good news is
that the majority of these places are easily accessible from the UCL
campus, on foot, by bus or by tube. Travelcards and bus passes are
readily available and I would recommend obtaining a student
photocard which provides a 30% discount: details can be found at
the ‘Freshers’ Fayre’.
UCL itself has much to offer and its multicultural, friendly
environment creates a truly inviting atmosphere. At UCL there is
ample opportunity to diversify your learning experience by getting
involved in the numerous clubs, societies, events and activities
offered by UCL and the UCL Union. These range from amateur
dramatics to Jiu Jitsu, and beyond. However, if these do not suit
your taste then you can occupy your time in the many union bars,
cafés, restaurants or gyms, all based on campus.
And finally, ‘Freshers’ fortnight’ at UCL is a fantastic way to meet
new people, join clubs/societies/sports teams and make the most of
all the freebies – YOU COULD NEVER IMAGINE BEING
ANYWHERE ELSE!

Some students will be lucky enough either to
have parents who will cover their costs in full or
to win a full scholarship, but others will need to
finance their way through university by a
combination of grants, loans and part-time or
vacation work. It is not unusual for UK students
now leaving university to have loans outstanding
of around £10,000. Although this is a great deal
of money, a recent survey indicated that
university graduates can expect to earn
£150,000 more over their lifetime than nongraduates;
so it is undoubtedly a worthwhile
investment for the future.
