term time, but recognises that this is
sometimes necessary. Students are, however,
advised to discuss this with their Tutor in the
first instance in order to come to a sensible

Student Fees and Finance An Introduction to UCL
UCL provides a number of support
mechanisms to help students but the onus
shifts more to students themselves seeking
out the advice and support that is available.
Each student is allocated a Personal Tutor who
can help resolve difficulties and also advise
about the programme of study the student is
following, especially in the later years when the
choice of courses within a degree programme
is much greater. There is also a Departmental
Tutor and a Faculty Tutor whom students can
approach for further advice.
First-year students in student residences can
rely on the advice of resident staff and every
student has access to the Dean of Students
and the UCL Union Rights and Advice Centre
for assistance with financial and personal
matters. There are also Advisers to Women
Students, and the International Office offers
expert advice to international students.
There is a full range of health services. The
student health facilities are based in an NHS
General Practice, located at UCL, and offering
a wide range of services for both maintaining
health and treating illness to those students
registered at the practice. It provides 24-hour
cover including home visits when necessary. A
dental practice is also based at the Health
Centre. A Counselling Service is available and
students having study difficulties can refer
themselves directly to the service, which is
confidential. There is also a small Day Nursery
for the children of staff and students.

Support and Advice An Introduction to UCL
Support and Advice
For many students, going to university offers a step on the road
to independence, bringing the freedom and responsibility to
organise their own time, finances and way of life.
UCL Library Services
UCL's libraries are located in the heart of one
of the greatest concentrations of libraries in
the world. Central campus libraries plus some
15 specialist libraries serving the wider UCL
community together hold around 2 million
books and subscribe to around 9,000 current
journals. Provision of electronic library
resources is generous and includes e-journals,
e-books and databases. Much of this
electronic material is accessible to UCL
students over the internet.
IT Facilities
Over 1,000 PCs are provided for use by all
students in open-access cluster rooms on
campus and in student residences. Over 100
software packages for teaching, learning and
general purpose use are available. Students’
own PCs and laptops may be connected to the
network through sockets and wireless
connections on campus and in most
residential study bedrooms. Many
departments also have computers for their
own students.
IT training courses are available for students
with minimal computing experience as well as
for those with more experience who wish to
develop their skills further.
