and is active in assisting
students. Private accommodation in London
normally takes the form of sharing a flat or
house, or renting a room in a house. A
popular option for UCL students is, at the end
of the first year, for a group of friends to rent
an apartment or house together: these are
often transferred from one group to another.
Rents in London vary widely depending on
quality and location but a typical student rent
in the private sector is around £95–100 per
week. Students live across London but most
manage to find accommodation to the north
and east of UCL, within a four to five-mile
radius and where there are relatively good
transport links.

Accommodation An Introduction to UCL
Accommodation
UCL is fortunate in that about 75% of its 4,000 places in
student residences are within 15 minutes’ walking distance
of the main campus and all are within a two-mile radius.
Jeremy Shaw is studying for the four-year BA
in Classics with Study Abroad. Now in his
third year Jeremy writes about where he has
lived as a student:
I recommend any fresher to try and get
university accommodation before they arrive at
UCL. The most obvious advantage to doing this
is convenience: once accepted by a hall of
residence you can relax about where you will be
staying in London. I stayed at an intercollegiate
hall overlooking one of Bloomsbury’s green
squares, near to my department. Its proximity
to UCL, and therefore its Central London
location, meant that I was two minutes from
any lecture and within walking distance from
galleries, bars and clubs in the West End.
Last year I lived out with a friend from halls
and a friend from my degree programme. The
process of finding somewhere to live was at
times challenging, involving many phone calls
in response to newspaper ads, but resulted in
finding a flat in Earl's Court.
Living out gave me the freedom of
eating whenever I liked and greater privacy; I
enjoyed having somewhere to retreat to after
lectures, and the experience has prepared me for
my year out in Italy. However, university
accommodation provides a great base and social
focus, and I recommend it as the best way to
spend your first year, particularly if you are new
to London.
The Union runs clubs for most major sports
and a significant number of the less wellknown
ones. From hockey, rowing and
women’s rugby to Kung Fu, water polo and
skateboarding – there is something to suit
every taste, and if the club or society for your
special interest does not exist, then it is very
easy to set up a new one. UCL sports teams
consistently rank top in London and are in the
top 30 nationwide. The 90-acre UCL sports
ground at Shenley, Hertfordshire, has such
high quality pitches that Watford football club
train there. UCL Union sport clubs organise
coaches to and from Shenley for both training
and matches. The Union gym (Bloomsbury
Fitness) and the Somers Town Sports Centre
offer facilities for activities such as basketball
and personal fitness programmes. The
University of London Union, adjacent to UCL,
and to which UCL students have access, has a
full-size swimming pool.
UCL Union has over 140 clubs and societies to
cater for most interests. As well as sport, there
are political, cultural, religious, arts,
