Academic Resources An Introduction to UCL
Academic Resources
There is an extensive range of central academic resources including libraries,
IT facilities, language-learning facilities and specialist collections available to
assist students on their particular degree programmes.
The First Year
UCL is able to guarantee a residential place to
all single full-time, first-year undergraduates
no matter where the parental home is,
provided that:
students hold UCL as their firm choice
through UCAS
the housing application form is returned by
the deadline (currently 31 May of the year
of entry)
students have not previously attended a
university in London.
Residential accommodation is of two types:
Halls, where meals are included (normally
breakfast and the evening meal)
Houses, which are self-catering, where
there are kitchen facilities for students to
prepare their own food.
Some residences are in purpose-built blocks
whereas others are conversions of historic,
older buildings. Most student rooms are
single-study bedrooms consisting of a bed, a
desk, chairs, a cupboard, a washbasin and a
bookcase. First-year undergraduates seeking
self-catering accommodation can expect to be
offered shared rooms (for two students).
Room sharing has proved to be a valuable way
to make new friends at UCL. Facilities will vary
between student residences: the newer ones
have en suite bathrooms and are provided
with computer points networked to the UCL
system for which there is a modest annual
charge. UCL is currently undertaking a rolling
programme of upgrading and renovation on its
older residences.
Costs vary between residences depending on
the facilities offered. Currently (2005/2006),
the cheapest accommodation is £60 per week
for a shared room in a self-catered house for
37 weeks – the most expensive is £122 per
week for a single en suite room in a selfcatered
house for 37 weeks. A single room in
a catered hall is £116 per week for 37 weeks.
Subsequent Years
Although there is some possibility of a further
year in UCL accommodation, most students
will need to enter the private sector for
accommodation in subsequent years of study.

service keeps a comprehensive list of suitable
accommodation
