Conclusion


Teacher talk is a kind of professional language used to impart knowledge to students,exchange feelings with them in the teaching process, which is based on specific featuresand practical need of teaching. The effective teacher talk plays an important role inproviding students with comprehensible input, and has influence on students' output.This thesis provides a detailed and descriptive analysis of the features of teacher talkof English reading classes in the junior high school. Through classroom observation,audio-recording and questionnaire, the thesis focuses on the analysis of the quantity andquality of teacher talk, teacher's questions, teacher's feedback and turn-taking. And themain findings can be concluded as follows:? With regard to the amount of teacher talk and student talk in the classroom, theresearch reveals that teacher talk, in stead of student talk, is in dominant position in classtalk. Students are not given comparatively more opportunities to interact with the teachersand their classmates and thus get more exposure to the TL. It shows that the classesinvolved in the present research were, more or less, teacher-centered.In order to develop students' initiatives and motives and promote their languagecompetence and communicative ability, teachers should arrange the class time in a morereasonable way, and offer as many opportunities as possible for students to produce morecomprehensible output, hence promoting students' language acquisition. They should alsochange their role in classroom from a mere informant or a model to more comprehensiveroles as a controller, an assessor, an organizer and a prompter. The role change requiresteachers to limit the amount of teacher talk while pay more attention to its quality.
As to the amount of teacher questions, there was an obvious priority of displayquestions over referential questions. On average,display questions accounted for 84% ofthe total number of questions, while referential questions only took up 16%.Referential questions can help students get more involved in the classroominteractions and express freely. Thus, instead of checking their language knowledge only,teachers should intentionally resort more to referential questions to encourage students to produce comprehensible output and create more opportunities for communicating in targetlanguage. And in language classroom, wait-time is rather important because of theprocessing time required to comprehend and interpret questions in a foreign language.Students need more wait-time to understand what teachers say first
