摘要:This thesis focuses on English cooperative revision at junior school.The first purpose of the study is to improve the effectiveness of theteaching and learning. The teachcr helps each student participate activelyin various organized teaching activities and improve their self-confidenceand interpersonal skills.
Chapter One Literature Review
There are three sections in this chapter. The first section statesdefinition of cooperation. In the second section, the research ofcooperative learning at home is offered. The third section reviews relatedstudies on cooperative learning abroad.
1.1 Definition of Cooperative Learning
Although a lot of research has been made about cooperative learning,and different definitions came out. Actually, at present, there is still not anaccurate definition. Some scholars, researchers at both abroad and homegave definitions of cooperative learning. Some typical representatives arelisted here.According to Kagan & 01sen(1992) defined cooperative learning as"group learning activities in which the learning is based on the sociallystructured exchange of information among the learners".Cooperative learning refers to the instructional use of small groupsin which learners work together to accomplish meaningful school tasks.(Kargan, 1994; Slavin 1995). In their opinions, cooperative learning is aninstructional method in which students of all performance levels worktogether in small groups towards a group work.
A scholar called Lin Shenfu (1989) in Taiwan says that cooperativelearning in an innovative teaching design, whose purpose is to change theactivity study into the common activity, whose success or failure concernsgroup's honor and disgrace.Wang Tan, a researcher in Shandong Institute of Education Science,holds that "Cooperative learning is the teaching strategy system aiming topromote mutual cooperation in a heterogeneous group so as to reach thecommon learning objectives, based on the overall results for thereward".(Wang Tan, 2002:106).In summary, cooperative learning which is quite different from thetraditional method where students work individually or competitively andconcern with the improvement of their own grades is an effectiveapproach to teaching and learning. Students in cooperative learning aredivided into several study groups according to different sexes, level, andabilities. Each member of the groups has his own responsibility not onlyfor learning what is taught but also for helping group members create anatmosphere of achievement. They should cooperate with each other andstudy together. Finally they should try their best to reach the expectedEnglish learning targets.
