1. Introduction

Study on learning style is an important field of education research, as such research has an important influence on educational theory and practice. According to research results regarding learning style, a fitting, suitable and effective learning style will be conducive to solve difficulties in learning and will result in higher student achievement (Hattie, 2009). As there are more and more international students with different cultural backgrounds who are studying abroad in colleges and universities, relevant scholars have found that there are differences in learning styles of students and that these differences seem to be related to different cultural backgrounds. The impact of cultural differences on learning styles is paid more and more attention to by scholars (Joy & Kolb, 2009). This study explored the following two questions: “Do learning style differ from various cultures?” and “In which aspects could Asian students learn from western in learning styles?” This paper reviewed literature regarding four learning styles to elaborate on the impact of cultural differences between the learning styles of students in general and Eastern and Western in particular. These four perspectives are based upon the Solomon-Felder Index of Learning Styles (Solomon & Felder, 2002) and studies regarding differences in learning styles of Asian and Western students (Yue, 2003, 2004; Ho, Holems & Cooper, 2004). This literature review focuses on the following four learning styles: (a) an active learning style, (b) an inquiry learning style, (c) an experiential learning style and finally, (d) a cooperative learning style.

These learning styles will first be described and the possible differences of the use of these learning styles for Asian and Western students, more specifically exploring intercultural learning from the viewpoint of Hofstede's cultural difference model (e.g. Signorini, Wiesemes & Murphy, 2009). Hofstede categorices student populations into two large groups; those from a Confucian tradition/culture, supposedly characteristic for Asian students and those from a Socratic tradition from Western society (also see ). Next to that, empirical evidence regarding the influences of such national cultures on learning styles of students is discussed. Next to that, After this analysis, the literature review expounds the aspects that Eastern students can learn from Western students. Finally, after critically analyzing the related literature implications will be formulated as well as possible directions for future research.
