Compared to his contemporary writers, D. H. Lawrence suffered more no matter in his life or in his career. He was born in a working-class family, with a coal miner father and a frail but iron-willed schoolteacher mother. When her love for her husband turned to dust, she focused her love on her children, sons in particular and spared no effort in “preventing her sons from following in their father’s footsteps down the mine.” (Gamini Salgado, 2005: 13) His childhood was marked by poverty and tensions between his parents. And it was also stuffed with suffocated love from his mother, particularly after his brother's death. His youth experience provided him the raw materials for a number of his early works. And his iron-willed mother and her suffocated love somewhat exerted a great influence on his works throughout his life.
His views on women and marriage were also influenced. His relationship with his soul mate Jessie Chambers, “Miriam” of Sons and Lovers, “the spiritual, nun-like girl shying away from physical contact which the novel presents” (Gamini Salgado, 2005: 19) deteriorated and finally collapsed due to his mother’s fiercely possessive love. His relationship with Louise Burrows, based on sexual attraction, finally went to collapse after his mother’s death. The death of his mother in 1910 depressed Lawrence. Later he wrote “from the death of my mother, the world began to dissolve around me, beautiful, iridescent, but passing away substance less.” (Gemini Salgado, 2005: 27) After that came another important woman, the woman of a lifetime. In 1912, D. H. Lawrence met Frieda Weekly, six years older than him, the wife of his former college professor. D. H. Lawrence and Frieda Weekly eloped to Germany, to live a happy life, leaving a social scandal. But happiness was clouded, and tortures came together. When living in Germany with Frieda, Lawrence was arrested and accused of being a British spy. Later, when they returned to England, Lawrence was accused of being a German spy. Besides the war years brought D. H. Lawrence a great deal of mental suffering and physical distress. He suffered from both worsening health and shrinking financial state. After the bleak war years, Lawrence began an voluntary exile which he termed his “savage pilgrimage”. And the wanderlust took him to Sicily, Australia, New Mexico etc.
His abundant yet hard life experiences enriched the content of his works, and marked an original impact on Lawrence himself and his works. Lawrence’s selection of topics were vast, ranging from nature, love, war, power, mental and non-mental consciousness to male and female, while the physical and emotional relationships between men and women was one of his frequent subjects. In his works, he celebrated the natural world, and condemned the evils of industrialism, which he considered as the cause of the destroyed English landscape and dehumanization. He celebrated the liberation of the body, and condemned puritanical attitudes towards physical passion. However, his explicit port
