ism is freedom, that is,the absolute freedom of man tochoose his actions. Each person in the world has his or her freedom to make a“free choice”asto what action to take and how to take it in the face of various circumstances.“If existencedoes precede essence, one can never explain one’s actions by reference to a known orparticular human nature,in other words, there is no determinism-one is free.Man is freedom”(Sartre,1995).Sartre points out that if a person cannot make a“free choice”in the presence ofthings according to his own will,he will lose his individuality, and cannot be considered a realbeing.Sartre’s philosophy of existentialism is not only the core of existentialist literature butalso the ideological basis of all schools of postmodernist literature.

Chapter 5 Choices and Responsibilities in Runaway

5.1 Freedom of Choice

In Sartre’s opinion, treating the world reasonably is called Bad Faith.Because thisreasonable perspective is that personal values impose on the world, this act itself is notreasonable and random. However, reason would depress emotion and make people limited inconcepts without freedom.

5.1.1 Juliet’s Free Choices to Own the Peaceful Mind

Juliet is the heroine in“Chance”,“Soon”and“Silence”.She is always criticized by thepeople of the town because she does not conform to the social stereotypes like the traditionalwomen. She is to a certain extent a woman who has come out of self-restraint,actively searchingfor a real ideal life and gaining peace of mind.

Juliet is a highly educated female academic, which puts her in an awkward situation. In thetown where she lived, women’s education was not valued.“In the town where she grows up,herkind of intelligence is often classified as a weak or superfluous thumb”(Munro,53).Herclassmates tease her as a“fool”and a“scholar”(Munro,103).When Juliet returns home with herdaughter, the book states,“she growS  up in a town about twenty miles from the one in which shehad grown up,where Sam and Sarah still live.Apparently, the train doesn’t stop there anymore”(Munro,89).We can see that the town is in a remote area and the closed life makes people’sminds more and more confined.Once a person does not live up to social expectations, she isrejected by the group.Juliet becomes a deviant in the eyes of the town’s residen论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
