sting speech acts are widely used in daily life thatpeople always intend to make others to do something for themselves. Therefore, theaims of this present study are to answer how many factors influence requesting speechacts and how these factors impact on choosing strategies. When using requeststrategies, address form cannot be neglected. In different situational variations, socialdistance, dominance, controllability of acts, age and sex, requests will bedistinguished, so that request strategies that are picked by interlocutors will have achange.

1.3 Significance of the Present Study目前研究的意义
Theoretically, the present study will promote a further understanding aboutrequesting speech act theory. Most of Chinese scholars pay attention to westerntheories and summaries, while now this study will focus on how to make requestsappropriately through the process that comes from theory to practice and goes back totheory.On the practical level, the present analysis and research may conduct people toappropriately use requests to realize the goal in daily life. How to do things withrequests is tremendously important and necessary. Based on the corpus of Americanhot show Desperate Housewives, it will benefit English learners to enhance theircommunicative competence and make better cross-cultural communication.

1.4 Organization of the thesis论文结构
The thesis is chiefly based on the previous researchers of Austin (How to DoThings with Words, 1962), Searle (Indirect Speech Acts, 1975), Dirven & Verspoor(Cognitive Exploration of Language and Linguistics,1998), Blum-Kulka,et al.(1989),Brown & Levinson (Politeness: Some Universals in Language Usage, 1987), ZhangShaojie, Wang Xiaotong, Liu Guohui (2007) and others. In order to better understandrequesting speech act and appropriately use requests, the organization of the presentstudy is arranged as follows:The thesis is comprised of five parts.Chapter one provides a brief introduction to the thesis, which deals with researchbackground, objectives and significance of the present study and organization of thethesis.Chapter two offers a review on speech act theory including the concept ofrequests, the classification of speech acts, requesting speech act and request strategiesused in requesting speech act. Because of some limitations about the corpus Americanhot show Desperate Housewives, it is necessary to comprehend the genre of televisioncomedy-drama series.Chapter three emphasizes on research methodology, in which theoreticalframework will be displayed, data will be described and collected and procedureexplained.Chapter four copes with analysis of the collected data and discussions. This mainpart concentrates on initiating markers of requests, some situational variations andmajor variables such as social distance, dominance, controllability of acts, age andsex.Chapter five draws a conclusion on the thesis, which summarizes the majorfindings, implications and limitations.
