3 The Analysis of the Dialogues in English Job Interview from Interpersonal Metafunction

3.1 Overview

This chapter mainly analyzes the dialogues in English job interview from interpersonal metafunction. To analyze it clearly, each dialogue in English job interview is divided into three parts. In the first part, which we call “Time for interviewer to ask for some basic information”,https://www.51lunwen.org/languagethesis/  the interviewer and the interviewee greet each other to begin the conversation, then the interviewer ask the interviewee some questions, The second part often starts with a signal interrogative sentence “Do you have any question to ask me?” which is said by the interviewer, and we call it “The interviewee’s Appropriate questions”. In this part, the interviewee will ask the interviewer some questions. The last part is aimed at bringing the interview to an end, being named “The ending part”. In this part they will talk about their next interview or about when the interviewee will be notified of the result of the interview, and then they will say “Goodbye” to each other.
The analysis in the section is based on Halliday’s theory. The basic roles, mood system and modality system of the three parts of dialogue in English job interview will all be discussed.

3.2 Roles of Addressers and Audiences

Generally, in a job interview, there are often two kinds of roles: the interviewers and the interviewees. Sometimes, we may have two or more interviewers in one job interview, but this thesis just deals with those interviews which include only one interviewer and one interviewee.
Obviously, in part one, “Time for interviewer to ask for some basic information”, the interviewer is the dominator, the one who control the progress of the interview. He or she keeps asking the interviewee questions, like “Why are your desire to get this position?” or “How many languages can you speak?” or something like that, showing that he is demanding the information of the interviewee. As from table 1 we can see, when the role in exchange is demanding and the commodity exchanged is information, the clause will be a question. When the interviewee becomes the addresser, he or she use statements to give their information to the interviewer as the interviewer is asking for.
While in the part two, “The interviewee’s appropriate questions”, the interviewer and interviewee may probably change their roles. As we know, this part usually begins with the interviewer’s words “Do you have any question to ask me?”, then, if the answer is “Yes.”, the interviewee changes his or her role to an addresser, who wants some information from the interviewer. But if the answer is “No.”, then this part will just go to the end and lead to the next part. And the roles of these two participants in the first part will maintain to the end of the interview. Usually, this part is very short or even won’t exist.
In the last part, “The ending part”, the interviewer gives some information to the interviewee, such as “We’ll probably get back to you in a week.” So he or she uses statements. And the interviewee may say “Thank you.” or “Goodbye.” Also uses statements.

3.3 Mood System

This part is dominated by the interviewer. The interviewer asks questions, and the interv
