Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

On July 29th, 2019, a new short video column named Anchors ExpoundingLianbo appeared and became very popular n that summer. This column was launchedby the news new Media center of China Media Group for the purpose of occupyingthe new field of public opinions, attracting more audience especially the young adults,and improving the power of propagation and influence of the mainstream newsmedia——CCTV News.

Anchors Expounding Lianbo is presented by short videos that are recorded inportrait screen mode and usually center around the anchor who is on duty, at the sametime, these videos are edited, added subtitles, pictures, Internet memes, as well asappropriate background music, after which, they are finally uploaded on different newmedia platforms such as Sina Weibo, Tik Tok, Kuaishou, Bilibili, etc.. The averageamount of time of each episode is about 1 to 2 minutes. The content is usually the hotnews that have been broadcast in CCTV News on the same day, and something thatinterests the public or other significant social issues and phenomena. Every evening,there is a CCTV news anchor on duty using interesting and funny expressions that isfavored by the young to expound news, express their own opinions about hot issues,and interpret important policies and principles of government.

Anchors Expounding Lianbo, as the product of media integration and a goodexample of media reformation and variation, is such a column that roots in traditionalCCTV News but it has made lots of variations and breakthroughs in many aspects likeform, content, broadcasting manner, news anchors’ style and so on. On the other hand,it is specially tailored for new media platforms. In this way, Anchors ExpoundingLianbo has gained great popularity since it was launched. 

1.2 Significance of the Study

This thesis aims to find out and delineate the panorama of CCTV news anchors’stylistic variation in the short video column Anchors Expounding Lianbo and furtherdiscuss the influence of their stylistic variation on language ideology, as aconsequence, the study is significant and valuable both theoretically and practically.In the following part, the theoretical value and practical significance of the study willbe elaborated.

1.2.1 Theoretical Value

This study aims to find out characteristics of CCTV news anchors’ stylisticvariation in the column Anchors Expounding Lianbo and explore its influence onlanguage ideology. There is no doubt that the study has great theoretical value.

(1) This study provides a new perspective for the study of news texts. Newstexts are usually studied from perspectives of politics, journalism, rhetoric, and so on.This thesis innovatively analyzes news texts in terms of stylistic variation, which canenrich relevant studies in the field of news texts and variation study.

(2) Language ideology seems to be far away from our daily life and hard to beanalyzed. Through this research, it is clear to be found that language ideology is notdisconnected to our everyday life.
